Is it normal for the DJ to not attend rehearsal?

swfan2016, on September 13, 2017 at 11:12 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

We are paying our DJ extra to play music for our ceremony. I asked him if he attends the rehearsal (obviously thinking he would require extra money for the extra time), but he says he never attends rehearsals and just goes off of visual cues. This makes me a little nervous....

Our DJ is also doing our ceremony and not attending rehearsal. I didn't even think of having him attend. Our officiant will be there.

No vendors are attending my rehearsal except the coordinator

I've never been in a wedding where a DJ attended the rehearsal.

I've never seen a dj at a rehearsal. The coordinator at your venue should be able to cue him about the music changes for the processional and when you kiss and everyone claps, it's a dead giveaway that the recessional music should start.

What I always do is make a processional blueprint with music cues in it. I'd recommend you do that to and make sure he gets a copy.

Our DJ didn't. He asked for a detailed timeline for the ceremony, so he knew exactly when people were supposed to walk, what songs were being used, when the officiant would be speaking, and the specific order for what the officiant planned to do. Our coordinator, however, was present at the rehearsal. He had the same timeline and told everyone where and when to walk. On the day of the wedding, he was cueing WP members and the DJ so everyone walked at just the right time. There were no issues.

I've never heard of a DJ attended a rehearsal. They'd have to lug all that equipment for a quick 15 minute rehearsal? No. To me, a rehearsal was simply meant for the wedding party to know their order and where to stand.

If it's a DJ he's pushing a couple of buttons - visual cues are fine. If it makes you feel any better, my DOC/officiant gave my string quartet visual cues as well.

Okay good to know! I guess I'll have someone use a cell phone to play the songs for our rehearsal.

Oh I guess I should add...for my first wedding, we had a pianist play our music at the ceremony. He did not attend the rehearsal and it would have been much better had he done so. He didn't fade the music as discussed once I got to the altar and I stood there for about one minute waiting for him to finish the song. #awkward

My DJ asked...I didn't know. I asked our officiant n she didn't think it was necessary so we ended up not asking the DJ to be there. The officiant n DJ have already worked together.

I've never been to a rehearsal with musicians of any sorts. If your DJ is a pro, he'll be fine. You don't need music at the rehearsal

I've never heard of doing this. You pretend that there is music and someone goes "Dum dum de dum music music..dum dum de dum" during the parts that there is actually supposed to be music.

DJ's usually have other events days before a wedding. They're professional and know what they're doing so I think he should be fine

If having the songs play at your rehearsal will make you feel more comfortable just play them on your phone. That's quick and simple and everyone can get a feel for the music that way

I've never heard of a DJ even attending a rehearsal ever. So no, not weird.
