Is it just me?

EGD, on March 17, 2021 at 12:10 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 25

Or is trying to make the playlist for your DJ the hardest thing in the world lol

I have over a year until my wedding, but my DJ sent me the online portal to start playing around in and I have NO clue what songs to put on there.

Mine and my FH do not have a popular music taste so I'm trying to find things for everyone, but damn is this hard lol

We haven't officially started ours yet, but I have a whole spotify playlist dedicated to potential ceremony songs lol. Smiley cry

FH and I do like songs that are more popular, so I guess we're in the clear on that, but what's going to be tough is incorporating music the older crowd will like, which is more 90's country...which isn't my fav lol. I've been looking at a lot of playlists on spotify though! Pinterest also has good lists for wedding songs!

I already have our Ceremony songs! The reception is killing me tho lol.

FH and I and our circle of friends are fans of Pop Punk/Heavy metal which isn't everyones cup of tea lol

Luckily a lot of the songs our older guests are going to like I also enjoy, I'm just struggling for the perfect mix of different songs lol

Why are you doing the dj's job? Don't make it harder than it has to be. Let him know what you listen to and go from there. If you must pick out songs, browse playlists on Youtube and Pinterest

It’s only hard if you’re doing too much. It’s your DJ’s job to figure out what music your guests will like. It’s your job to give him an idea of what YOU like. I just told our DJ a handful of our favorite songs so he could get an idea of what we’re in to. Then I gave a couple of songs we really wanted to make sure we heard at the wedding. Also gave him an idea of what we aren’t into. He did the rest, and he totally nailed it.

I wouldn't call it "doing his job" I would call it helping him give me the wedding I want.

Realistically I don't have to give him any songs but the special dance songs. However, if I just gave him Genre/Artists that we both like chances are he could play a song we actually don't like. For example: I'm a huge Journey fan, however I can't stand Don't Stop Believin' tho it may be a fan favorite, I don't want it played at my wedding.

If we gave him just songs WE were into, no one would have a good time lol

If you’re into pop punk, something fun to explore might be covers. There’s a bunch of fun 50s to 80s kind of classic wedding songs with fun covers, which might appeal to multiple crowds . But again, something I’d mention as an idea to your DJ instead of a must play type list— that way he or she can take the idea and test the waters and go from there. If they try one and it’s a hit, they can try more of the genre, if not they can switch gears Smiley smile

I did go to a wedding a few years back that played a bunch of pop punk— they played some of the couples’ favorites earlier in the night, and the DJ realized there was a crowd for it! He didn’t go all in immediately but as it got later and some of the older guests started headed home, he went back and really leaned into it and it was so much fun!

Oh thank goodness I'm not alone on this one! It's literally one of the last things we have to do and I just can't get it done. Lol! I think we are just going to give genres, artists, etc that we like for the reception and let the DJ put a mix together. As far as specific songs you don't like - I saw your Journey comment above - our DJ has a do not play list that we fill out. Maybe you can give them a do not play list?

I literally said to my mom "you think you know what you like until you're given a list of 100,000 songs and told to pick up to 100 of them lol .

Putting Don't Stop Believin' on the do not play list was the first thing I did! I asked about that in our phone interview with him hah

I would have a hard time with this too! i feel like my taste is very particular to pop/k-pop/musicals and my husband's is R&B/hip hop and although combined we would have a more varied playlist, it still feels like it would sound real random haha

Sure, but it's still far easier and more efficient to provide a "do NOT play list" and a small "definitely play list" along with a list of preferred/unwanted genres. And then let them handle the rest. Assuming your DJ is experienced, they will be able to give you the wedding you want with this information.

Leave it to the expert. I told my DJ what kind of music we prefer and left the rest to him. Except for the special songs and a few do not play....like the Chicken Dance😂

My dad is my dj and he said a lot of brides don't realize how many songs we have to pick lol. He knows my crowd so he's going to know what to do but he said I still have to pick certain songs for certain parts of the ceremony and reception. I also banned R. Kelly music.

Maybe try a DO playlist and a DONT playlist and see if he can help with the rest? Also, maybe pick the brain of some of your guests to see what their requests would be to help.

    YES to banning R Kelly!!!

So far I have like 3 songs on my Must Play list and only one on my Do Not Play. We know we want some songs by FH brother's band which my DJ said he could do since they're music is on all streaming platforms.

I'm picking my youngest cousins brain, cause she somehow knows EVERY song to ever exist lmao

I'm kind of enjoying going through the 100,000 song list it's reminding me of songs I forgot existed lol and some i'm just like "why would anyone play this at their wedding"

The Chicken Dance is song #1 on my Do Not Play list!!!

We are also mostly leaving song selections to our DJ. However, our DJ asked us for a Must Play list and a Do Not Play list, and we are also providing him with a list of songs requested by our guests (we're including a line on our invites to ask guests for song requests). My fiance has a huge list of songs on the Must Play list, to the point where if all of those were played, there would be almost no time for any other songs, so we're working on minimizing that list to 10-15 songs max. 😂

    I bet that's fun!

I was trying to think of songs that I know would get everyone to dance and stumbled across a few that I remember I hated lol.

Banning R. Kelly is funny only because my dad LOVES him and would've probably played him if I didn't make the request. Sorry sir, no sickos allowed lol.

Ugh music worksheets have been my least favorite part, it's so hard. I've probably changed all my song selections at least 3 times and I still haven't even finished it lol.

I had a hard time too. It was hard because of the crowd that I am have invited to the wedding. I had to be mindful of that because I have songs that is not meant for everyone. Therefore, I had to go through a lot of songs to find ones that would be for everyone. It was definitely a process. I am going to have the dj show his talent as well (mixing in his style).

DH took our DJ's request for suggestions as a REQUIREMENT to make a playlist.

We may or may not have had a bit of a blow up about it, until I reminded him that she had simply asked for things we liked, and her job was to figure out the rest.

Use the time to listen to music and see what makes your feet tap! Then bookmark those, and, after you have a small playlist, let your DJ know that those songs really caught your ear.
