Is it expected for a bridal salon to hold onto the wedding dress?

Hi everyone,

I got word from the bridal salon I ordered from that my dress came in (woo!). The issue is, they want me to pick up my dress and store it myself until it's time for alternations (in August) that are being done by their salon. They're saying that because of the pushed back weddings, their storage is pretty full, so they want people to take their dresses, but I live in a small NYC apartment with my fiance and there is no way he won't see if the dress. Both of our parents live out of state, so I would have to make a trip to deliver it to them to keep, but would then need to make a trip pick it up before alternations/have it dropped off.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought bridal salons are supposed to hold your dress for you? I get they might be full, but is it unreasonable for me to push back and try to get them to hold it? I'm just not sure if it's normal for brides to hold onto their dresses until alternations.

Thank you in advance!

I worked in a bridal salon for a few months. Most do not hold dresses, they need to clear space for samples even in the back. The salon I worked at charged $35/month if a bride wished them to hold a dress. Maybe inquire about a storage option?

Did you take home a contract after you purchased your dress? Check it for info on this, mine spells out that I’m required to pick up and inspect my dress within 7 days of arrival, and if I want it stored there is a $150 storage fee for up to 1 year of storage.

Most bridal salons won't hold your dress for an extended period due to space restrictions and liability.
There are some that will hold your dress for a fee.

We had a bridal shop in my town that suddenly closed its doors after going bankrupt. They never even reached out to any of the customers. They sold off a lot of the dresses to other companies with out carrying if they were already sold to brides. This company ended up on the news for not giving their customers their items they purchased. A lot of brides didn't even know if they were going to get their dresses or not. I heard some of the brides never got their dress. A bunch of customers filed lawsuit against the company. And that was way before covid.

After hearing about that I wouldn't put my trust especially during covid times in a bridal salon or tailor to hold on to my dress. I'd be worried about if they were to get shut down do to covid right before the wedding how would I get my dress. Or if they were to permanently close.

You can buy a garment back and so that way you can store it in your apartment and not let fh see it

The shop I got my dress from stored it for me for 14+ months and steam cleaned it for free! (I also got my alterations done there, and they kept it throughout that process of course as well.)

Interesting...when my daughter finally chose her dress, the salon included storage as a standard part of the transaction. Dress arrived in May, but the wedding wasn't until October. I paid in full once it came in and they stored it until time for alterations, and final pickup was three days before the wedding...no additional charges. It worked out perfectly for us.

I guess the salon I bought mine from is different. They were going to hold on to it from February 2020 til October 2020 when I pick it up from alterations. Due to Covid and the salon temporarily closing, they had everyone come get their items due to liability concerns during the shut down.

My bridal salon held on dress and are still holding it until 2 weeks before the wedding when i will have my final fitting. I took it in for my first alteration appointment in November and they have had it since then. I would explain your situation and hopefully they can come up with something for you or see if a friend will store it for you that you trust.
