Is it a red flag if the caterer takes 1-2 weeks for responding?

Leslie, on September 19, 2021 at 1:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

So we have been trying to work with a caterer over the last 4 months to work out a quote, menu, and plan. When I told them I was going to be in town only for a couple weeks in June (I live abroad, so emailing has been the main communication method), they didn't respond fast enough for us to be able to make a decision about catering during the trip. Even when I emailed her saying we were interested in moving forward, she still took over a week to respond to us. The response rate is usually 7-14 days, but we like this caterer the best on our venue's approved caterer list. Should I take the slow/poor communication as a red flag? I am wondering if the communication timeliness will improve when the wedding date comes closer (summer 2022) and if anyone else has experienced this?

That’s a tough question. In pre-Covid times, it would be a red flag. Because they should get back to you in 2 business days. But with postponements currently stacked on top of each other, they are working overtime so they don’t all have the office staff to get to you immediately. I would give them 1 week (5 business days) benefit of the doubt but anything longer would be a red flag.

I had this issue with our caterer. We chose an all inclusive package that our venue offered. We live 3.5 hours away from our venue so I had to arrange appointments for when we were going to be in town. I emailed, called & text them with no response. I finally reached out to our venue- they told me if I had any issues with anyone to let them know (that’s what we were paying them for). I had a response within 15 mins of contacting the venue. I’d reach out to your venue…

Have you tried calling them rather than sending emails for a direct and fast response?

When I was State-side, I did call several times and had to leave voice messages. But since I live abroad making international phone calls is not ideal every time I want to chat, unfortunately.
