Is having a childrens corner at the reception normal?

Kayla, on December 2, 2011 at 12:20 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

My son is only18 months and there will be other children at or reception I'm sure but how do I keep them entertained while we cut the cake and first dance. I was thinking of having a little corner( with coloring books and other crafts) next to our moms and grandmas who could watch them. Is that weird??

It's not weird to have a children's area. But do you want your moms and grandmas to be busy watching the kids?

We had 35 kids at our wedding so I set up a kids table in the back corner. I covered the table with butcher block and put out crayons, coloring books, glow sticks, puzzles, and cars from the dollar store. The tables nearest the kids table were of the families with the kids most likely to use it. I did not ask anyone to watch the kids because I figured parents would be parents and it worked just fine.

I did end up with kids brining me cards they made for us all night, but I loved it.

We got one from a girl I nanny that showed our "new married family" on the inside which included DH, me and child one and child two. We don't have kids...

We are using the back room as a kids "rest" area - we're going to put games & activities back there so that the kids can take a break from the party! we're actually hiring a "babysitter" (a daughter of a family friend who is so excited to get paid to be at the wedding lol)

Our daughter will be 20 months old at the time of the wedding!

Our son will be 25 months by the time of our wedding. And yes I'm sure that my mom and grandma would mind because it would be off in a quite area and seeing that they don't really like loud music they wouldn't mind peaking in on them from time to time. @ A.P your right I do expect parents to be parents...beceause no matter was is going on at 9pm I will be rocking our little one to bed lol

We had a kids table, with glow sticks, and snacks and coloring books and play dough. The kids at our wedding were 16 months to 9 years old, so it was a big hit. Parents of the young kids stayed with them at the table, but the older kids could come and go as they please. And even some adults had fun at the kids table! Smiley laugh We didn't have anybody manning it, but it was certainly nice to have at the reception for everybody. Smiley laugh The kids were also allowed to request music. So yes, there was Justin Beiber at my wedding, but ALL the kids danced to it! Even the baby! Smiley winking

I don't think it's weird at all. It's quite a good idea you won't have to worry about the kid's getting into anything while everyone is trying to focus on the dance and cake cutting.

    We have 3 kids' tables.

most of the kids are 6 and older, but there will be some ranging from 2-5...so I bought activity books and crayons to put on those tables.

And our centerpieces are martini glasses, so the kids' tables will have small martini glasses filled with hershey kisses

I like the idea of butcher paper on the table!

I plan on doing the same. Except I'm also bringing a t.v. and dvd player so that they can watch movies. We have 3 children, and I know they will need to be distracted as we do our own thing.

I'm sure the other parents will be greatful of this idea. Smiley winking

Not strange at all! My husband and I had a table of children's books that we had loved as kids (we had bought them from library sales) and left them out with a sign instructing each kid to take one home. It was a big hit! Kids love little things you do specially for them, and parents appreciate the kids having something to DO at the wedding. Smiley smile

We will also be having a kids table. Putting together a little booklet of FH and myself of little things about us that the kids can do with it - like color, dot-to-dot and things like that and then spiral bind it. My aunt did this for my cousin's wedding and it was big hit. So I was going to have her do it for our wedding as well.

Pay a babysitter. Ask your planner for a nanny service recommendation. Some services are geared to taking care of the kids at receptions.

If you are on a boat, please hire caregivers whose job it is to watch the children. Accidents can happen. Make sure these caregivers have First Aid/CPR. Moms and grandmas still would like to mingle with other guests and may have obligations at the receptions (I can think of the many things I have seen my sisters and mom do that have nothing to do with childcare at a wedding). A few summers ago my niece was married at a resort with a pool and some debated allowing the children to take a break and swim. I said no not unless the caregivers were trained in water safety...

But yes kids tables are becoming more normal, or kid spaces.

We are having 3 tables in the back devoted to kids and we have a lot of age 10-13 boys coming so we set aside in my MOHs villa, which is on sight, for xbox, so when they get sick of watching the wedding stuff they can go play video games. My son is so excited..lol..

I was going to do a kids table and all that. The places I am looking at do not give kids meals and I ended having to add more people to the guest list cuz we where going over. So I had cut the kids. But it is a great idea to have a kids area.
