Is bringing your own food as a wedding guest ok?

Hi,

I'm a wedding guest at my boyfriend's sister's wedding 10 hours away on a beach. She's planning on having pizza at her wedding. I'm someone with severe food allergies and refuse to eat things without knowing the ingredients/talking to the person who made it. His sister refuses to talk to me so I have no idea what will be in or on my pizza or anything about it for that matter. She has food restrictions too so I would expect her to communicate with me about my restrictions, but she won't.

I'm allergic to soy and I'm lactose intolerant so pizza wouldn't be the best for me unless I knew the specific ingredients since I'm not trying to have everything I'm allergic to in one meal. Do you think it would be ok for me to bring my own food as a wedding guest to avoid a possible trip to the hospital?

She's having him walk her down the aisle because she has no other guy to walk her down the aisle since she doesn't get along with many people. She doesn't talk to her dad or stepdad so her brother is the only other person left. They don't really get along because his sister is a "Me me me!" person and apparently "I take his attention away from her". I tried talking to him (and the family) about not going but I'm just using it as a free vacation since I'm staying in their beach house.

She actually isn't doing formal invitations. She said "they are informal verbal invitations". My boyfriend talked to his sister and she got upset and attacked him saying "Why do you think I'm incapable of feeding her?" but she won't talk to me about my food allergies so I don't know how she expects to know what I'm allergic to... Her only food will be pizza as far as I know...

I had him mention it to her today and she attacked him with "Why do you think I'm incapable of feeding her?" but she refuses to get in contact with me about my food allergies so I don't know how she's going to figure that out. Unfortunately, he's walking her down the aisle since he's the only man left that she hasn't completely burned bridges with. So I'm getting dragged along and using it as a free vacation since it's her "wedding week" and I don't have to pay for anything but my own food.

He got in touch with her and apparently she said I'm allowed to bring in my own food, but she got angry because she took it as "Oh they think I'm incapable of feeding her"... when she doesn't know my food allergies... But nobody wants to go because it's 10 hours away for a week because it's "her wedding week" and everyone has to pay for themselves.

None of me wants to go since she's someone I don't get along with. I did nothing to her besides the fact my boyfriend's attention got taken away from her (she's a me me me! person). The only nice thing is that it's at the beach so it's technically a free vacation.

With that response, in addition to her lack of communication, she clearly doesn't care about anyone but herself. Do not attend that wedding.

I don't think either of you should go - and no, he is not obligated to walk her down the aisle.

If she's alienated everyone to that extent, there's a reason.

For your own safety, I would not go, and for your BF's sanity, I would urge him not to go.

To repeat what was said upthread:

    "No" is a complete sentence.

Is she paying for your accommodations and everything for her "wedding week" (which is not a thing by the way)? This just all seems to crazy to me.

Yes I agree with the other ladies. I would eat before you go. The venue might not allow outside food.

No, she is not paying for any accommodations. Their mother had to rent out a beach house (which mind you, she's a single mother with a low income) for a week for her wedding. Bonus points is that she chose the week of the 4th of July so everything is more expensive. I spoke to my boyfriend and since she threw a fit about me not trusting her with my food, I have to buy my own food for this wedding too...

She's a "Me me me!" person so it's a "wedding week" and then she's going off to a honeymoon. But she vacations more than anyone I know.

Wow this is so crazy. I have a few family members like this who are just unreasonable and volatile and crazy. I try not to enable them too much, but I know it's a tricky game

    This. 💯 percent.

I’m also not sure how “free” of a vacation that is for you if it’s filled with family stress and obligations. And you’re taking off time from work, school or life to spend with this crazy family doesn’t sound like fun to me. You can totally bow out and let your boyfriend go.

I have to take off a week from work for this wedding. Not to mention my summer is filled with working so I can have money for school, but that's going for the wedding. Luckily, the dress I bought was on sale (like 75% off) so at least that went for me. I don't know anyone at the wedding besides his sister, her fiancee, and his parents. Also bonus points is that he's walking her down the aisle and a groomsman so I'm sitting by myself but I'm still getting dragged because everyone else is Smiley smile

Every single "update" is just more reasons why you shouldn't be going to this wedding. At this point, I think you better just accept your choice to go and try to make the best of it. You're only going to make yourself more miserable than you need to if you can't find some way to at least see some humor in all of this or enjoy the parts that you can control.

It honestly sounds like you dont even need to be going to this wedding....

Bring your own food. Who honesty cares what she says? Its a matter of your health and no one has a say except you in that matter.

You don't have to; you're choosing to.
