Is black okay to wear as a guest dress?

Yes, it's fine. Some "rules" are silly.

I think so. With the exception of someone else showing up in a wedding dress, I totally do not care what guests wear to my wedding.

The weddings I have been to some young women wore black dresses. I think it's fine. It's more late afternoon/evening wedding I think.

Ooh, I just heard this question discussed on an etiquette podcast! Their consensus was yes, totally fine to wear black to a wedding, though it might be good to bring a colored scarf, shawl, or cardigan because some people may still be of the belief that solid formal black is for funerals. Even some bright shoes and a bright piece of statement jewelry would probably be enough.

Yes. I wear black at almost 100% of the weddings (and other functions in general) that I go to.

I have honestly never heard the "no black" for a wedding until last year. My mom wanted a black dress (which I was/am totally fine with, I told her to wear what she found comfortable). My one older (mid 50s) coworker gave me so much crap over this, stating that black is a sign that someone does not approve of the marriage.

P.S. - My mom ended up with a black and white dress that she loved, and I didn't bat an eye.

I love black. I've probably wore it to almost every wedding I've gone to. It's a nice color that matches everything & you can dress it up or down.
