Is anyone thinking of making their own wedding cake?

JustCan'tWait, on April 17, 2015 at 6:10 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

I'd really like to make our wedding cake myself. I know it would be a lot of work, but I feel it would be much more personal, probably a bit cheaper than having one done for us, and a great project to add to my baking repertoire (I bake all the time. ALL the time. There is always cake available at our house!).

Obviously I'd have to properly design it and do lots of research, so I'm wondering if anybody here has done it too? Did it go well? Did you do any practice runs beforehand? How long did it take you?

How many guests are you having and how large of a cake were you thinking?

My sister made a cake for a friends wedding. They had cupcakes for most of the guests and just a 2 tier cake (10" and 8" rounds, 2 layers each). I'd say it took my sister a several hours to get all of it done because it was covered with fondant. She made most of the flowers out of gum paste a week or two ahead of time which helped cut down the time needed the day of. She did do a trial run with Styrofoam to make sure the decorations were feasible.

I think it's a really nice touch if that's something you are passionate about. Just make sure you know your limits and aren't putting too much stress on yourself prior to leading up to it.

Good luck! Can't wait to see pictures if you decide to do it!

I am! We're having cheesecake for dessert and a late night dessert table so I'm making a small red velvet cake for my FH. Be prepared for the "are you crazy" look from people. and questions like are you sure you're going to have enough time. I enjoy baking and I know how much I can take on. I just want to have the memory of baking a cake with my mom opening up a bottle of wine with her. I don't care how it looks so much more that I can remember baking my wedding cake with my mom. below is what I'm going to do

"Mrs. Weathervane" over at weddingbee made her own wedding cake and blogged about it. She is a professional baker, so she included some helpful tips for anyone wanting to do it also. I definitely recommend checking some of her posts out:

I would recommend not to. It will add a TON of stress to your wedding day. It won't be as fresh as ordering one from a bakery, unless you plan on making it the day before. You have to worry about transporting it to your venue without it falling over/falling apart. That's not something you should have to worry about.

I mean, I bake all the time too, but that doesn't mean I will risk baking my own wedding cake.

My sister had her aunt in law make their cake. she's no wedding cake professional but it came out very well, mainly because it wasn't a traditional cake. They did 4 'tiers' but they were not stacked. They had 4 square cakes of different sizes, then on the display table they were scattered and put on 4 different height cake stands. so it was like a deconstructed wedding cake. and it was easy for her to make because it was basically a normal cake.

so making your own is totally doable if 1) you think outside the traditional wedding cake 2) you somehow have time to do this the day before your wedding ?? I wouldn't want to make it earlier than 2 days before so that it stays fresh and delicious

Everyone who is giving her an example: You are giving her an example of someone making a cake for someone else. She wants to make it for herself for her own wedding. That's a lot of stress.

If you like to bake and you can do it I say go for it if you don't have a lot of guests. If you have more than 50 people I wouldn't do it. That is a lot of work and a lot of stress the few days before. Do you really want to deal with that? Maybe instead you could make a grooms cake? Something sepcial for the FH and its WAY smaller.

I thought about it.....for about 3 seconds. This is my second marriage, and one thing I learned from the first go round, was do as little DIY as possible. It's so stressful, without adding another "layer" of work. (pun intended Smiley smile)

    I would advise against it.

I didn't think about it for a single second. I love to bake, but, after the princess cake debacle of 2013, fh and I have hung up our aprons lol We did our daughters cake; 3 layers per tier, fondant over, and tons of small details. We were up until 1 am, cursing and bickering. And my poor kitchen was a disaster! I couldn't imagine doing all of that, and then waking up the next day to get married! Ya, NO! LOL but, if you're up for it, all the power to you! Good luck!

As much as I love to bake I watch way too many baking shows to even think of trying to bake anything of importance.

I would be afraid of it falling apart as I would try to get it to the venue or setting it up.

I think if we were not having a destination wedding, I would consider making it myself. I bake a lot too. It would definitely be a labor of love, and I would definitely recommend a trial run. Are you having an at-home reception? What would scare me the most would be trying to transport the cake. Just try to keep in mind all of the factors that would be involved: refrigeration, transporting, number of servings you'd need, whether you can do some of it in advance (bake and freeze the layers), and maybe if you have a friend you is also a good baker who can help if you run into trouble with time. Good luck!

I get so many people telling me I need to make my own cake! I'm already going to have enough stress though! But if fw doesn't get with the caterer soon so we can figure out the cost of food, then I'll probably end up making our own! I NEVER freeze cake! It taste soooo much better never frozen!

ETA: I'm doing a 2-layer cake and mini-cupcakes for my mom's wedding next month!

There are so many things that I am having to DIY for my wedding, that I couldn't imagine doing my own cake, too. However, I am not a super comfortable baker. If baking brings you joy and relaxes you, go for it! There will be many opinions you will hear--successes and failures--but (especially if you are footing the bill) it is ultimately YOUR choice. Are you a confidant and zen baker? Then I say go for it! And brag all over WW when you're done Smiley winking

Thanks for all your responses, everyone! We're having no more than 50 guests, so it wouldn't end up being a huge cake, and after chatting with a friend who makes cakes for a living, she's given me some ideas about scheduling. I've got lots of ideas now, just need to think it through a bit more I reckon Smiley smile Whatever I end up doing, I'll try and make sure to get some photos on here!
