Is anyone having a fake wedding cake?

Is anyone doing the fake wedding cake and the serving sheet cakes? If so, how are you going to do the cutting of the cake for the bride and groom? how do you get the real piece in there? any thoughts would be great!!

If you are having a tiered wedding cake, The very bottom layer could be real, and the rest could just be fake, Then you and you new hubby can enjoy the wedding cake (it should be cut in the kitchen area along with the sheet cake...most guests, I think, want to eat the real wedding cake b/c couples usually have some non traditional flavors, and they want to try a different flavour of cake.) Would that work?

You can do an entire layer of real cake to cuke into or just a slice. There are places all over online that rent out these elaborate fake wedding cakes that have just a slic open for you to put real cake in so you can cut into it. After the wedding you just send the fake cake back! here is an example

I was actually thinking about doing a fake wedding cake. It gives you the nice smooth fondant look without having to use fondant. Not everyone cares for fondant. But the baker would cut a piece out of the fake cake on the bottom layer and place the real cake inside and mark it so that when it comes time to cut the cake you know exactly where to cut. Having a fake cake can be cheaper and give you the option to still use buttercream which a very smooth presentation.

I have looked into this and found that even the fake cakes are about 250 to almost 400 dollars with a big deposit down of up i saw about 350!! I would just go with the regular cake and if you have to budget then just done get such extravagant flavors!

Alot of the fake ones are almost as much as a real one. right now what i think i'm going to do is has a three tier cake, i'm going to make the bottom two fake (myself) and then the top tier will be real and thats the one we will cut into. And serve everyone else sheet cakes.

Usually, it is the bottom layer that is real. It looks more natural for photos. Your top tier, when there is one, is usually saved and wrapped up to keep for your first year anniversary. You do not have to makeit real but it will look a bit strange cutting into the top layer.

You can get a real tiered-cake for a few hundred dollars, if price is an issue. The trick is not get one from a baker that specializes in cakes. Get it from a nearby grocer that makes cakes in addition to everything else. Like we use Publix and Costco for cakes - a lot:-)

    Happy planning!

Good point^ i had thought about that also, i guess the bottom would have to be real instead of the top. I know wal-mart does 3 tiers starting at 138, but sheet cakes at sams club are 30, so i guess i need to figure out which was is cheaper.

We are having a small two tier cake... top for 1st anniversary, and bottom for us to cut into.

then having sheet cakes in the same theme set around it.

The tiered cake will be up on a box so it looks bigger.

With sheet cake, you also get to give your guests bigger pieces of cake!! AND we are getting them in different flavors!!

The fake cakes cost almost as much as the real cakes because the cost is in the actual decor of the cake - apparently that is the part that takes so much time. I am thinking cupcakes! Maybe not I don't know. I have a lot of time to decide.

As a cake designer I can tell you that most of us don't discount fake cakes as we still have to buy the forms and we are still icing and decorating the cake as we would a real cake. Also there are many of us out there, me included that can smooth our buttercream very well that it is often mistaken for fondant. So check around with your cake designers. I am sure you can find one that can give you the look of fondant in buttercream.

We were going to go with the fake cake and serve sheet cakes. I found one to rent for $65. However now I am torn because I found a cake design that I fell in love with, but not sure if in the end it is worth the extra $300. Also the sheet cakes will be much easier to cut and serve.

If you can spend the extra it is well worth it! One of my many regrets from my wedding day was the cake! We were broke and a friend offered to make it. It was a disaster. 13 years later it still makes me sad. You may want to go with a REAL cake a personal bride and groom cake that you cut into and get cupcakes at Walmart or Samsclub for your guests.Everyone loves cupcakes. It looks super cute to!
