Is anyone going to Punta Cana?

Kayla, on September 27, 2019 at 12:03 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7
Hello! So I was curious, is anyone planning on going to Punta Cana for their honeymoon? If so, how are you feeling about it? My FH and I had already booked our honeymoon there at Iberostar, but he is hesitant about going considering the mysterious deaths that happened in Dominican Republic this past year. He is considering cancelling the trip because he is afraid of something detrimental happening, but he is still waiting on more information, if there is any, regarding the deaths. Was anyone previously planning on going to the Dominican Republic but changed their minds? Do you think it will be okay for us to go as long as we don't drink out the minibars? Or if it was you, would you cancel the trip?

I haven't been, but I have talked to 2 travel agents, both who have said they have been there since these deaths started and feel completely safe going. Both said they would recommend resorts there with confidence. I read up on it, and it doesn't seem like a large amount of people and it also seems like it was people that had prior health conditions. But not much more info. I understand the unease of going. I have completely removed it from my possible honeymoon destinations

You will be fine. I've been many times. I wouldn't cancel. There's always news stories about issues in DR, Mexico, etc. We've never cancelled trips as a result. If you look at the # of tourists who visit these places annually--- there's bound to be something adverse that happens once in awhile. No matter where you travel there will be concerns (think: pickpockets in Italy, or the fact there is a travel advisory "warning" for France right now saying "exercise high caution"--- mind you, I am Canadian so the warnings may be different). I would travel to both of those places without concern. If you aren't well travelled then I think it would be easy to be scared off by these situations but if you are well-travelled and comfortable enough to go- just exercise caution as normal.

We went at the end of July, and we were fine. We both drank from the minibar. We stayed at Excellence El Carmen and loved it. They actually provide full, sealed bottles of liquor as a minibar, versus Hard Rock where there was a tap system that can be tampered with (which they have actually since removed from their rooms).

Yeah I've been to Punta Cana once a couple of years ago and I loved it and didn't experience any problems. It's mostly my FH who is concerned, especially when he has family members and family friends telling him we shouldn't go :/ but that I had the same thought about the number of tourists verses the small handful of people who got ill and died.

Oh I didn't know that people had prior health conditions. All I knew is that they drank from the minibars.

That's comforting to know that you went just recently, and drank from the minibar too!

Not all of them, but I know there were ones that said they died of a heart attack, but already suffered from previous issues
