Is a makeup artist really worth it?

Whats with having to pay $50-$85 for a consultation..What if they suck? i could see maybe $20..You're trying to win my business right? You cant trust pictures on their site.. Im so fustrated, this is the last thing on my list to do.

BUT I do see the advantage of hiring a makeup artist to come to you for $250(total after consultation). But Hey I can save $150 by driving to them, I read about so many brides regretting the money they spent on the dumbest things for one day, Im keeping my common sense...thanks. IM sure my fee will tahnk me afterwards.lol.I love buying shoes

I totally agree..the MAC in International Plaza here in Fla. also has the private room in the back but the fee for that is $150 and it includes your bridal party. I will definitely be using them on the day of my wedding especially considering thier close proximity to the venue. Also you made a good point in finding out that many of them are free lance makeup artists. This way if you wanted the $50 trial in the store to check thier talents you can then feel more confident in booking them to maybe come to you on the day of, that way you know they are worth thier fee. I think my main concern is wanting the look of beauty without looking like Im in a circus or something. Im glad you found what you were looking for...by the way, Im also going to be a Mrs. Smith...lol

That's good to know. I was actually thinking about that on my drive home today about asking the girl at the MAC counter if she would freelance. I use Mary Kay but I also use some MAC products. The girl I always go to looks like a drag queen with all the makeup she wears but when she beats my face, it looks amazing lol. I do have a reference for a makeup artist so I'm going to do a trial with her. That would be my first preference b/c she does hair as well and if I can get my hair & makeup done at the same place that would be awesome. FH's brother is a hairstylist and he is fabulous but I need him getting ready to get to the church instead of fooling with my hair. He doesn't need anybody's help being late.

Im also having my hair done by a friend of the family that works at Euphoria, she is great!! And she will come to me for free! I wouldnt pay someone $35 to put a clip in my hair. lol But She is the only person I let do my hair anyway.

@bride to be,...........What a great idea, you can go to the store and get a free trial with the artist or make the appt for $50. Then book them on the side. I never thought of that. Either way you get something for free, if they do your makeup in store for free, you have to buy $50 in makeup, if you schedule an appt for an hour, you only get a free mascara and the lashes

Shaking Head* I totally understand where you are coming from. I'm in the Washington, DC area and the MAC artists that I know of, NEVER use the same application sticks on multiple customers. I was quoted $90.00 for an hour make-up application session. HOWEVER, their prices (from what I'm told) for weddings, include multiple applications throughout the day/night.

Now, on the other hand, if you still want that dew-kissed glow on your special day. Do what my sister did....she drank TONS of water and her complexion came through flawlessly, then she applied her make-up...her face looked wonderful. I hope that this helps!

I hope you don't mind me piping in here... I know nothing about makeup, but it seems to me that if you really want to look good for the most important day of your life (which by the way, is your "statement" to the world that you're getting married to your sole-mate for the rest of your life). Then, I find it interesting that you would "skimp" on budget makeup, or make-up artists.

I equate it this way: when I go to Vegas (as an example) or on any vacation, I look at it as something "special" that I'm going to "treat" myself to a good time, and cost is no object. With that thought in mind, I always have a great time. When I try to nickle and dime everything, I am continually disappointed.

If you can't do it right, then don't do it at all! On the other hand, if you don't mind your guests believing that they are at a dollar store wedding, then go for it. And they WILL talk about it later! Just my two cents... thanks!

I think what alot of times brides dont know is that.. we buy our make-up which isnt cheap by any means so when we do a trial its really not a profit to us were covering the cost of our kit and traveling. Not only that most make-up artists have gone to school to train and to make a career .. This is our profession and how we make a living. We charge how we see fit for offering our skills.

I wish you the best of luck on your special day and congrats !

Everyone will find true value in different things, but even though I am by no means a make-up expert, I can see both sides. However, from experiencing servicing so many weddings, I now purchase (and get for free) small make-up samples from my MaryKay rep (oh no! lol) to keep in my Day-Of-Kit. So many times, we've had brides getting teary and inadvertently wiping away make-up they did at home or heaven forbid it be a steamy July afternoon, and she sweats her make-up off. I keep the samples to keep my bride from losing it completely, but I can't tell you how many times I have heard brides cursing themselves for doing their own make-up for those very reasons. As our professional friends have offered up, they have products that eliminate these worries. In my opinion, the less stress, the better day and the better memories. Just some things to think about. Smiley smile

IM FINE NOW LADIES THANKS. i CAN AND WILL GO GET MY MAKEUP DONE WITH MY APPOINTMENT FOR $50 AT THE MAC STORE. IF I LIKE THE WORK, REMMEBR THAT ALL OF THEM ARE FREELANCE AND i JUST SAVED HALF A CONSULTATION FEE BY VISITING HER AT WORK. I CAN ALWAYS ASK FOR HER TO BE THERE AT MY WEDDING. I THINK IN THESE TIMES, MORE ARTISTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO OFFER MORED FLEXIBILITY. NOT VERYONE IS LOOKING TO GET FREE MAKEUP. JUST LIKE SOMEONE SAID, IF THEY BOOK AND LEAVE A DEPOSIT AT THE CONSULTATION THEY DONT HAVE TO WIPE IT OFF BEFORE THEY LEAVE. LOL. OR MAKEUP ARTISTS COULD OFFER TRIALS ONCE A WEEK AS A GROUP AND DO AN EMPLOYEE. EVEN BETTER IF THEY ALL WOULD JUST POST SOME BEFORE AND AFTER PICS OPN THEIR SITES INSTEAD OF USING PICTURES OUT OF MAGAZINES OR ADS FROM THE MAKEUP THEY USE SO WE GET A FEELING OF HOW GOOD THEY ACTUALLY ARE...LIKE GLAM SQUAD, WHAT A GREAT SITE. THANKS WINDY

Hey there! Congrats on your up and coming wedding! As a makeup artist proffesionally and one that still works with MAC I understand all your thought and concerns.

For the most part, we have to charge so much for the trial because we are using our product, which is generally expensive to replace, our time and personal time consulting you.

Yes you can get all these things at the mall, but as someone else suggested, you may encounter a few bumps in the road, which on your wedding day you should not have to deal with. You may arrive on a busy day and have to wait, I ve seen that happen far too many times or the person you thought you were going to get may not be there.

I guess I am partial because I am an artist, but if you really desire an artist, Im sure you can find one who would be able to assist you for a reasonable amount of money.

Remember, you will have these photos for the rest of your life.I hope you find the right artist!
