Is a DOC worth it, if I have a Maitre d'?

MrsRidley, on January 12, 2017 at 8:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

I posted this yesterday, but there were so many post that mine got knocked off the first page in like 5 minutes, lol.

My venue provides a Maitre d' that helps orchestrate the events of the wedding. I contacted my venue manager who told me that their Maitre d "ensures proper timing and making sure I am comfortable on my wedding day", and that some couples either have their DOC until the ceremony portion is over, or do not have one at all. I have heard great things about a DOC. I have quoted some prices and I feel that they are really high, except one that offers a DOC for $75/hour. Do you all think I should hire a DOC until the dinner portion, or none at all, given the information provided by my venue manager. I should also say that I am having my ceremony and reception at the venue, and it is all-inclusive and provides centerpieces, set-up, breakdown, etc. Just trying to figure out if it is worth the extra money, since we have the maître d'. Thanks!

I wasn't sure about this either, but I met with my and I did not think I could go on planning without them. I wanted them there to do everything wedding with me, no joke. My venue does offer me something like a Maitre d', but I feel like the DOC will have the best vision of how I want the wedding to be and I don't have to do anything the day of. They set up decor and take it down and pack it back up. They are in constant contact with the vendors, they review all of my contracts to make sure that I am getting all of the services that I am paying for, they make sure the guests know what is going on and keep the "flow" going, they organize the rehearsal, distribute all final payments and tips to vendors and a lot of other things. I think an excellent DOC is worth every single penny.

Agreed with the above. Your maître d will keep the timing on track but won't set up, tear down air accept deliveries. I think if it's in your budget, I would 100% do it. Just be sure to ask exactly what your DOC covers so that you can let the maître d know and vice versa.

I have a DOC (more of a month of based on the contract). I get married on Saturday and am not feeling much stress because she is handling basically everything. A good planner is worth their weight in gold.

Thanks kittycow, read that a bit quickly. OP, I'd still have a chat with a DOC who has done weddings st your venue and see exactly what tasks they do. Only then can you decide if it's worth your money or if the maître d will be more than enough.

Thank you for your advice. I decided the extra money for the DOC would probably be wasteful, as the venue manager has assured me that many of the couples do not have a DOC because their maître d' is the bomb! lol I am staying at a hotel down the street from the venue, and my hair and make up artist are coming to the hotel, so I don't think there will be much for the DOC to do, being as though the venue provides everything I need.

We didn't hire anyone. Our venue was a full-service hotel, with almost 100 years experience. There was very little DIY - programs, menus, escort cards - that the venue set-up for us. We hired a florist/decorator. The venue supplied a banquet manager, who was with us every step of the way. For the night of the wedding, the banquet manager had 2 assistants and there was also a dining room captain. The 2 lead vocalists for our band (30 years experience). did the few announcements, that had to be made. The band plays there at least once a month, so their timeline and the venue's were the same. Everything ran seamlessly.
