Is a dj worth it?

Kimberly, on March 18, 2019 at 3:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
Hi.

I am having a very small party. Between 20 and 30... is hiring a dj even worth it for a small party? Did anyone not have a dj for their wedding?

Depends on what your back up plan is for music. I think it's fine, if you have a solid plan set in place. For instance, if you don't hire one, you will have to provide the music yourself, speakers, etc.

If you don’t plan on people dancing I don’t think a dj is necessary. But if you want people to be dancing and a party like atmosphere then I think a dj is necessary.

That's fine, but remember you probably won't want to be doing all of that yourself on the day. Therefore you will need to hire a family member or friend to do it for you. Especially for the ceremony, because you won't be able to play that since you'll be IN the ceremony itself.

We're having about 50 people at our wedding and didn't bother with a DJ. We're going to pipe in music through the venue's AV system and not bother with dancing—just a lively extended cocktail hour and dinner party.

If it's more casual, I would just set up a playlist myself and save the money.

I would suggest setting up a playlist and designating a friend or family member to keep control over the music in-case something does go wrong. Definitely save the money plus you can enjoy all of the music that you want without the hassle! Smiley smile

Do you have any friends or family members that will be attending that wouldn't mind being in control of the music? Maybe even be willing to make announcements for important songs...if that is something that matters to you.

I don't think a DJ is a MUST with such a small party. I think having someone control the music from a playlist would be appropriate. I would probably go with that choice.

Yeah my family will be attending. Will also have a day of coordinator so maybe they wouldnt mind pressing play either. But someone will be willing to do it I'm sure.

We decided not to get a DJ. We are buying Bluetooth speakers to sit around the rooms and having a playlist ready to go. Our venue is a 1850's farm house so it's small rooms instead of large open spaces. It seemed like a better idea for us because of our venue.

We are having a small wedding...50 guests invited.
My fiancee insisted on a DJ....he said we don't want to have to entertain anyone ha ha.
That's what the DJ is for!

We decided to skip the DJ.

Small party of about 35 guests and early reception so a playlist was the option for us.

We had less than 40 people at our wedding and decided not to have a DJ. It just wasn't right for our vision.

I had a playlist made for the ceremony, each song in the order we wanted it played. We created a cocktail hour/dinner playlist of love songs from every era.

Then we had a dance party playlist.

We did all of this with Apple Music from my iPhone and 2 Wonderboom bluetooth speakers that sync together. They are small, but powerful. It worked really well.

If you know your crowd and know what music they will like, it makes it much easier. I did have to spend quite a bit of time "arranging" the playlist. So many fast songs, then a slow song, with some cultural music mixed in to keep everyone interested. I did not want to just set it to shuffle and hope for the best.

If you want someone to run the show and provide music and equipment, try searching for a beginner who is looking to build his/her reputation. You can hire them for a lot less money. Try craigslist and DJ/entertainment vendor websites.

It really depends on when, where, and what kind of event you want. DJs do a lot more than just the music. They also set up the sound system for the ceremony, makes sure that the reception goes on time etc. If you are getting married and having the reception in a place that has these things set in place you should be fine. If you want a more casual event, definitely something you could consider doing yourself. Now, if you want to have a rocken party and your venues don't supply any sound system, I would highly suggest hiring one.
