Is a cash bar at my reception ok?

I am getting married next year in May. I've been looking at venues and I'm trying to decide if I want to do a cash bar for my guest? Or do as suggested do a set amount that I will pay for and then after that it turns into cash bar? It is getting very expensive with providing the food deserts...

I am getting married next year in May. I've been looking at venues and I'm trying to decide if I want to do a cash bar for my guest? Or do as suggested do a set amount that I will pay for and then after that it turns into cash bar? It is getting very expensive with providing the food deserts cocktail hour not to mention the site rental and ceremony rental and many many more expenses is this ok and acceptable? I've been to wedding where ice paid and where it was open bar? I didn't mind either?

@FutureMrsWhite: no one is saying to not get married if you can't afford to host alcohol. No one is even saying you need to host a full open bar. They're trying to say that hosting at least beer and wine is acceptable, that cash bars are terrible even if you are hosting beer and wine, and that if you can't afford to at least host beer and wine then you need to scale back the guest list. No one is saying to just not get married.

@Sour Shoes... I'm not bragging. I'm simply telling OP that maybe her venue offers the same deal. Man. You ladies are SO QUICK to judge someone.

It's funny that we're the rude ones. All day I've read nothing but rudeness on here. So far..

A Bride is demoting their own sister from their BP. Of course this thread where OP wants a cash bar. Another post about having a fucking winter wedding outside in Washington. Let's not forget the post where the bride wants to charge for plus ones for people she doesn't know!!

    Yet we're the rude ones!!??

What world is this? No manners, no etiquette, no shame. Maybe future mrs White I'm the one that should leave. This is one scary place for a normal person who plans a wedding they can afford and treats people with gratitude for sharing their day with them.

Whoa guys. Why are we forgetting @FutureMrsWhite is paying for beer at her reception?

UO but I would rather have the option to buy a drink then not be able to drink what I want to drink.

Why yes, properly hosting guests with food and beverage is expensive.....that's one of the things you account for in planning a wedding.

My cousin and her Husband did one and her guests bought alcohol from them. I don't know if they preferred that they had to buy it but I say if you want to drink then maybe expect to pay for it. With that being said we are providing our own alcohol but simple stuff beer and wine and maybe some cheaper liquor. Drinking costs money and people know that so I don't see it being a problem. Your habit is not my problem.

Not everyone who drinks at a wedding has a problem.

Uh you should totally pay for soda. Were you ever considering not paying for soda? Holy hell.

As a guest I don't even bring money to a wedding. I would be annoyed going out to my car to get my debit card and looking for an ATM. And probably leave early

There's a difference between rude and blunt. People here don't sugar coat anything, but it's a blessing in disguise.

I opted to not have a cash bar and just provide wine and beer instead.
