Is a black wedding dress tacky?

Brooke, on October 26, 2020 at 1:34 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
I really want to wear a black wedding dress for my wedding. I feel like I’m not a traditional person and my fiancé and I have a far from a traditional relationship. However, I think the in laws might have a heart attack with the black wedding dress. Opinions?

I don't think it's tacky! I've seen a few people wear black dresses for their weddings. If you like the dress, I say go for it!

Colors mean different things to people from different cultural backgrounds. It is a fashionable color. Wear it if you like it. You should know if this is a serious problem for family, due to the association with death, or more a matter of " why can't you do what everybody else does?"
To which you need only say, because I do not want to. And I am the one getting married.!

I’m a firm believer in doing what makes you and your FH happy. It’s your day! If you are worried about how they might feel maybe you could give them a heads up but I certainly wouldn’t ask for their opinion.

My wedding dress is black, I got it from David's bridal, and I absolutely love it. Id show you a picture but I'm getting married on Halloween so a couple days from now. I'll post a picture afterwards.
My fiance are very none traditional as well we got engaged on halloween and I always knew I'd never get married in white.

If it makes you feel better, my future mother in law had a mini heart attack when I suggested a silver dress (I really wanted black but fiance wasn't on board). However, when she saw me try on a silver dress at David's bridal she was surprised by how much she loved it and advocated for me to pick that color (I ended up going with white). Sometimes I think people have one image in their head and can't get past that to see there are other options. It's your wedding, you do you and let them all adjust their expectations. If they know you at all they shouldn't be surprised, right?

I’ve seen some really cute black wedding dresses. To me, “tacky” isn’t based on a color because there are some white wedding dresses that are tacky in their design and fabric. When it comes to black wedding dresses, I’ve noticed that the key is to make sure it’s a nice quality dress/fabric and that it doesn’t look like a costume.

Oh! And, as for the in-laws, are you giving them a say in all of your wedding planning decisions? Are they paying for the dress? If not, get what you want. 🤷🏽‍♀️

No, black wedding dresses are not tacky! They have actually become quite popular over the last couple years (especially with several celebrities choosing black wedding dresses recently). Where brides previously had to choose evening gowns if they wanted to wear black, now it has become so common that many popular designers are including black wedding dresses in their lines. When I first got engaged
and started looking for dresses, I was dead set on wearing black (like, absolutely zero negotiation). After narrowing it down to 3 different ones I really loved, I ended up finding “The Dress”.... and it wasn’t black! I don’t know who was more shocked – my mother or me! LOL For that reason, I would suggest keeping an open mind when trying on dresses. Try on black, black & white lace, shades of white, blush, all different silhouettes, etc. You’ll know when you’ve found the one! And no matter what it is, stick to your guns! You deserve to love your dress and feel gorgeous on your wedding day, no matter what anyone else thinks of your dress!

No, not tacky. My sister-in-law wore a black dress when she married my brother. It was pretty. Laura Ingalls Wilder wore a black dress when she married. Lots of people have worn black when getting married. This tradition of wearing a white wedding dress is relatively new.

This Zander dress is GORGEOUS! We have it here in San Antonio TX, however they don't let anyone try it on. So I had a custom gown made in deep purple. We are doing a Gothic themed wedding and don't really care what others think, this is OUR day. Go for what you want!

It's not tacky maybe just unconventional lol. Black wedding dresses are beautiful but if you feel an obligation to wear white maybe just compromise like wearing a black dress that ombres into white or vice versa. Or with white studs on it. But in the long run wear what you love and really want.
