Is 5pm on invitation the afternoon or evening??

I'm in the process of working on invitations (I know it's early, but attempting to take advantage of VistaPrints awesome sale right now). Our reception will be starting at 5pm with cocktail hour. Should it be worded as "in the afternoon" or evening? I saw something online that said I could do...

Our reception will be starting at 5pm with cocktail hour. Should it be worded as "in the afternoon" or evening?

I saw something online that said I could do either, but saying evening would dictate a more "formal" vibe than afternoon. I initially had it as "in the evening", (I usually work 3am-11am, sometimes 6 or 7 is bedtime lol). But when my mom was proofing, she asked if it should be afternoon instead.

Would love to hear what advice you guys and girls have Smiley smile

You can avoid this altogether since one doesn't need to specify that a wedding is at 5pm instead of am, but really it's the afternoon

Evening technically starts at 6 PM. 5 PM is still afternoon.

@Sheri OP never said anything about serving a meal or not. Off subject.

Evening. You're having an afternoon wedding and an evening reception.

While it's bright daylight at 5 pm in May, I'd lean toward evening. The reception will certainly go into the nighttime hours, rather than be a daytime, garden party affair.

Why not word with "Join us for late afternoon cocktails, dinner and dancing"? This will keep everybody happy.
