Is 5pm on invitation the afternoon or evening??

Courtney, on July 21, 2017 at 9:10 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 50

I'm in the process of working on invitations (I know it's early, but attempting to take advantage of VistaPrints awesome sale right now).

Our reception will be starting at 5pm with cocktail hour. Should it be worded as "in the afternoon" or evening?

I saw something online that said I could do either, but saying evening would dictate a more "formal" vibe than afternoon. I initially had it as "in the evening", (I usually work 3am-11am, sometimes 6 or 7 is bedtime lol). But when my mom was proofing, she asked if it should be afternoon instead.

Would love to hear what advice you guys and girls have Smiley smile

I also support that 5pm is firmly in evening territory.

    4pm is even pushing it!

Technically speaking evening starts at 6. I know this only because I googled it for my invites. =)

We said 5 o'clock in the afternoon. I think technically at afternoon, but most consider if evening. But like you said we want a more casual feel. Also it is really early for invites, even if they're on sale. Have you created a timeline? Work backwards from the end of the night and make sure you want to start at 5. We got our invites earlyish and we decided on 5, but now I wish we had done 4:30 or even 4.

I think evening sounds better than afternoon to put on invites

I think technically it's considered afternoon, but because most people refer to 5pm as evening we put "evening" in the invites

Miss Manners says it is in the afternoon. I looked it up.

I think it can go either way. We said "evening" because our wedding was going until after midnight, was formal and was adults only. It seemed more appropriate for the event.

You put the start time of your ceremony, not your reception on the invites... If you reception starts at 5, when does the ceremony start?

A big thank you to all of you! It seems like most people are leaning evening, but it's "officially" afternoon.

@Ms.B we have the ceremony time in the invitation but I figured that would be afternoon. The 5pm time is for the reception card to include in with the invites, which seemed more "iffy" on the afternoon vs evening.

@TealWedding I know the wedding is a while away - but we already had to set times for our ceremony and reception locations when we booked them last November (we have a long engagement). Between that and the length of time we booked our photographer (which we did in April), we have most of our timeline set already. We also are doing a buffet, so we don't need to have menu choices to print the rsvp cards

@Courtney - gotcha. I usually see "immediately following ceremony" on the reception cards instead of a specific time. Unless you're having a gap of some sort. That'll avoid afternoon v. evening.

@Ms. B Ahhh that's true! We have a little bit of a gap, mainly for traveling purposes and to get the big family pics done (small wedding that's 90% family). But that would avoid the issue. I'll give that some thought also Smiley smile

5 is evening to me. By looking at the responses, sounds like you could go either way!
