Invitations, outer envelope, where does the return address go?

paula, on February 19, 2010 at 9:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I am DIY Calligraphy for my envelopes.

Checking my forgotten school stuff I found my calligraphy pen and sepia ink. Don't ask me why the ink was still good but it is. I've printed my guests info in a simple script font, clean up the console table, place a lamp under it and voila! I had a fantastic tracing table.

I've finally finished 100 RSVP and I really like them. My envelopes are light blue and sepia does the trick.

Then at 9 PM list night started the outer envelopes. My fiancee said the return address goes in the front so I made 20 envelops like he said. It takes a lot of time if you are not a professional calligrapher... This morning I start looking for samples on line and the return address is in the back of the envelop. I am confuse now!

I am not making the 20 envelopes again! However I could make the remaining 70 right... thanks!

It is really what you would like. we are doing the back in the center to give us more room on the front for the guests address and the stamp(s). (we bought return address labels to use to help seal the envelopes as well.) IMO, there is no right or wrong way for this, just your preference.

I agree with @Kerin, it is all about what you like I think for your own sanity I would not redo those 20 yikes! However it might give you more room going forward if you do the return addresses on the back. Kudous to you for DIY on the calligraphy, I am so stressing on what I am going to do!

    Kerin, thanks!

Jaemi I've count them again and I made 29. Nope! I will not make them again! I was so upset my fiancé this morning, lucky he was gone to the office...;-0

From now on I’ll use the return address in the back that will give me more space and I could use a bigger , more detailed font.

I personally like them on the back better, but I don't think it is right or wrong either way! Definetly don't do the ones that you started over again, just start the new ones on the back if you like it better that way. It will look great no matter what!! =)

I agree with everyone above. As Nichole mentioned, placing the address on the back is the traditional and etiquette way of address envelopes. However, in this DIY era, brides are pretty much doing what is comfortable for themselves as well as their budget.

    Hi Paula,

As stated above in prior posts, traditional positioning of the address is on the envelope flap, leaving the entire front of the envelope for your guests names and address.

Thanks everybody! All my new invites have only guests names and address on the front. Return address on the back.

I am using calligraphy and my fiancee feels that the font that I am using may be to big. It's there a proportions rule or something like that?

Congratulations on your marriage, Paula D!

We missed the opportunity to chime in on time, but for other brides out there with a similar question, the return address or label can be placed either on the front of the envelope or the back, whichever you prefer.

In our case, the labels set the tone for fun and humor. In the front, it grabs people immediately. On the back, it's a surprise! Smiley smile

    Happy wedding days to all!
