Invitation postage?

Kerry, on September 4, 2010 at 5:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So I sent out 75 invites earlier this week, and today I got 2 of them back in the mail with return to sender stamped on them. Not enough postage, $0.17 over. How is it that the rest went through, but not these? I know alot of people got theirs because I've already gotten a bunch or responses.

Postage questions... can I throw another stamp on these invites and put them back in the mail, or do I have to get a new envelope and two new stamps? I don't want to waste the envelope and stamp that I already used. Post office is closed for the long weekend, so Im gonna have to wait til Tues. to go in and ask. Has this happened to anyone, or know if this is ok?

I have added stamps to already sent packages before. but before you do that i would take it to a person at the post office and ask them what the deal is.

I would definitely tell the post office about this. How did the rest get mailed if they weigh the same and I'm assuming you had them mail the envelope ahead of time in order to find out exactly how much postage you would need. Definitely see a postal worker about this and explain what happened.

I did do a dry run, I mailed one to myself to make sure if went through, and I sent one to my mom to make sure it was enough postage. In addition, I sent both mine and my mom's from different post offices. I sent my mom's from my local post office and I sent mine from my mom's post office (we live 30 minutes away from each other). The rest of the invites were mailed from my mom's post office.

Its weird because we've heard from a number of people, some who lives in different states saying they've gotten theirs, but the ones that came back were from places very close to us. The USPS is so unpredictable!

I'm thinking that the original post office sent them, and the receiving post offices would not process them (picky postal workers perhaps).

Did you go to the post office and have them weighed first? It seems like maybe you just got lucky with the rest of them and they didn't send them back to you. I would just use a new envelope instead of using the old one. I mean it's less than 3 bucks to fix it so it's not like it's going to make much of a difference in your budget.

Wow, that's b.s. I've gotten two STDs back because my idiot friends can't give me their addresses correctly, but I guess I'll prepare myself for invitation mishaps like that, too. I agree with PP about asking the post office, but in my experience most are none too helpful.

Did you have the post office weigh the completed invitation?

I would just stick another stamp on that bad boy & sent it on its way...no need in wasting any more $$$

Yes, this happened to me. I weighed the invitation before I sent it and only needed 1 stamp. The majority of my guests received their invitation with no problem. About 6 received them with postage due, but said their mailman told them not to worry about it. Two invitations came back for insufficient postage. I was a little ticked off. I was wondering if certain post offices saw a wedding invitaion and automatically charged extra postage.

Almost all of the mail is processed by machine, so it's not a picky postal worker who returned your invites. The best way to determine postage is to take it to the post office to get the exact postage required. Some invites are slightly larger or maybe there is a ribbon or something on it that makes it non-machineable. The ones that got returned were most likely kicked out by the machine, and some of your invites were probably delivered postage due. If the postage due is less than the cost of regular postage (.44) I will usually pay it for my customers, but not all carriers will do this. Also, those missing RSVPs that people are saying they never recieved the invites. That is possible too. The machines that process the mail sometimes eats it, you wouldn't believe some of the pieces of mail that I have had to deliver, just enough info on it to know where to deliver or return it to.

The ones that got returned, if they say returned for more postage you can just put another stamp on them and mail them out. Just cross out the wording returned for postage or put the new stamp over the words

I am not sure what the problem is really because you said that they were returned because itwas $0.17 OVER on postage. If it's over it shouldn't have mattered. And if there are cancellation stamps on the envelope, be prepared for them to tell you that you'll need to re-package them and restamp them.

Brought the returned invites to the post office and the postal worker told me sometimes mail is picked out randomly, probably the case. Thanks for the info Meta. If I get any more back I'll just have to put the extra $0.17 on it and send it back on its way. No I just have to make sure everyone else got their invites.

My Ex husband is getting married 11/13/2010 and our daughter is getting married 10/31/2010, He showed me his wedding invites and I asked him if he had a clerk check them for the correct postage. (He's a mailman too) and he said he wasn't worried it should be .44 cause they weren't heavy. I looked at them and said they looked slightly oversized and he should check it out but they're his invites so do what you want. Well, I guess he decided to heed my advice cause my daughters just received thier invites with .61 postage. Ladies always take your invites to the post office to be sure you are using the right amount of postage. My daughter's invites worry me cause she used these petal envelopes with seals, but they kept popping open, i used glue & seals and I'm still worried. One of her guests lives on my route, and his invite arrived without the seal, it was still closed though. Got my fingers crossed for the rest.
