Okk , my FH gets these all the time, best advice is get it really cold, then using twezers try to lift out the corner, its the same thing the doc did when he went in, without the icing

either way it hurts like a b***ch, or clip it sideways with nail clippers and try to pull the lil corner down toward ur nail bed and it usually will pull it out of the skin

If it's bad enough, they will operate. If it's hurting you that badly though, I'd call and move the appointment up. Or, if there is a minor injury clinic nearby, go there. You don't want it to become infected. Try alternating heat and ice, and Tylenol.

When it happened to me the doctor had to lance(sp) the infection , clean it out and then he cut the toenail back. Because I was pregnant and he didn't want it to happen again he put something that prevented my nail from growing back on that side of my toe now it looks like my toenail is too small for my toe but no more ingrowns!

See the thing is, is that its not like a jagged edge going into my skin, its my entire nail growing sideways it looks like!! there isnt a specific part where it sticks out more or anything, it would be me cutting my toenail as far down and now im SCARRED to do that because what if i fudge it up and mutilate it and then the doctor cant help?!?!?!

Don't do anything. They will go in and remove it. Just go to Urgent care now, if it's that painful!

I know they are very painful and if it really hurts I would do what Analy suggested before I'd try "operating" on it at home...I tried that and that is why it got infected as badly as it did... if you don't feel you can wait til Monday I'd definitely see if they can squeeze you in or find an urgent care/minor injury clinic.

I also had to have an operation to remove an ingrown, except I had to have the entire nail removed.

If it's really bothersome go in to see someone asap.

My dr. Recommended soaking the foot in warm water with a bit of Epsom salt. Maybe try that.

Soak your foot in warm water with epsom salts. It helps it feel a lot better. I would not try and remove it yourself, it could get worse and even worse could get infected. You do not want to risk infection especially since MRSA is ALL OVER THE PLACE! Wait to see your doctor

If you don't have epsom salt at home, use sea salt.

I just had my ingrown toenail removed at the podiatrist office about a month ago. I kept trying to remove it myself for over a year and it always came back. They numb you up really good and and cut it out. Honestly the only thing I felt was the nasty shot to numb it. It feels so much better. If you can't get it on your own, I recommend going to the doc's and getting it over with. Don't wait to long, because you will have to soak it for a little while after it and wait for it to heal up before pedicures!

I was going to say the same thing Rebecca, the only thing that hurt really bad was the shot to the toe. They cut off part of my nail. I have found if I get regular pedicures, it doesn't come back. High heels help make them worse. Smiley sad

I've had a really bad one forever... seriously like over 10 years. I've gotten it cut out twice in the last 3 years and it still comes back (yes, they've even killed the root both times.. I guess I'm just immune). I think you can handle it with Tylenol.. also, try to wear shoes that don't have a hard sole... sometimes nice squishy tennis shoes absorb the impact more than dress shoes and just make the pain a little easier to tolerate. Good luck!

Wait to go to the doctor! The last thing that you want to have happen is to end up having the whole nail removed! I had mine removed in March of last year. It was the worst pain ever! I have had TWO c-sections and I would gladly take one of those any day! Not only that, my nail never grew back (and they told me it would) and I could not wear regular shoes until mid-June! Do the warm water with epsome salts and go to the doctor or urgent care clinic...trust me!!! I hope you feel better soon : )
