Inexpensive snack ideas for wedding

P.F., on December 19, 2017 at 10:26 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 28

FH changed his mind about what time he'd like the ceremony to be and what food he'd like to eat. He wants to go back to my original idea of a cake and punch wedding but he still wants to feed people. So now I'm trying to think of affordable snack ideas so people have plenty to munch on but not necessarily act as a meal. We're planning on it being a fairly short reception. I would like to do something a little better than a sandwich tray. Thanks everyone!

Veggie and fruit trays...cheese and crackers or a sliced meat tray can be nice while not killing a budget

Ask the caterer what they'd recommend.

When I make snacks for crowds, I usually go for a few dips and crackers/chips, pinwheel sandwiches (I use tortillas, cream cheese and thin turkey lunch meat), and when I need something more substantial I either order or take and bake some pizza and cut it into squares a few bites each rather than slices. Feeds a lot of people and it's fairly inexpensive!

@MrsBdeG: We were going to have Mexican food for dinner. With what they offer our choice for something other than dinner is literally chips and dip Smiley atonished . While we were pleased with our dinner options, that's not an awesome line-up for snacks. If I don't come up with something satisfactory soon I will keep everything as is. He asks for so little so I try to accommodate him when he wants something; this might not be one of those things.

@Jennifer: My mom suggested veggie trays too and I personally love veggie and cheese trays but FH wanted stuffed mushrooms and cheesesticks!! I had to explain to him how cheesesticks isn't feasible and stuffed mushrooms might be over budget lol. Thank you for the suggestion Smiley smile

Simple appetizers like mozz sticks, pizza bites, wingettes or fruit trays are the best bet.

Apps or even maybe small plates? Usually some restaurants can cater food for inexpensive for large parties. Mexican food is always a good way to go Smiley smile

@Malari & FutureMrsHill, y'all really think dip is a good snack at a wedding? I love dip and I'm pretty sure everyone loves some type of dip or another but I was bummed when our caterer only offered queso and salsa as a snack because I thought guests would think it's inappropriate! But so far the consensus is leaning towards dip so I guess I was wrong!

As much as I like the idea of pizza (more Italian style, less Pizza Hut), that is the one thing FH came out and said he doesn't want. Which is odd sense any time we're picking up dinner that's his go-to.

I'd also like to add that I don't want to make any of it myself because I can't guarantee safe keeping in the days prior.

@Iysha, that is exactly what FH wants lol. It is a dream of his I would love to make come true! As long as I can pay someone else to do it because while we will have a kitchen at the venue, doing it ourselves would not be ideal. The closest thing I came to is a couple Italian restaurants but I'm familiar with their food and it's not good :p

@Jacks: we're looking at the ceremony starting at 2 and the reception starting at 3 (8 min ceremony and he only has 2 family members so pics shouldn't take too long)

@ACD: that's a good idea. I think I've been going about this the wrong way

Do you just not like the idea of chips and salsa? I feel
like chips, salsa, & queso is perfectly normal for Mexican dinner. Maybe make it more substantial by seeing if they’d throw together nacho platters?

@FutureMrsHill: I just looked and yes! I don't know why I was so hung up on the snack thing that I didn't realize appetizers are literally that. Plus it's a natural reaction for me to scroll past anything remotely spicy but I shouldn't because every single guest would eat the crud out of jalepeno poppers!

I feel like an idiot lol. But to be fair when I asked them about snack options they didn't mention apps either so I'll take comfort in that Smiley tongue

@Laura: we were going to have tamales! It was going to be amazing! But I feel like that's too heavy for 3p?

@Shelby: I'm all for chips and salsa! We were going to have those on the side for our dinner but I didn't think guests would appreciate that as a snack instead of as a side? I am seeing with everyone's feedback that I was wrong so that's good news! A nacho platter is a fabulous idea

Tamales are never too heavy! People love tamales and would give substance to those who are actually hungry.

@Laura &LaraLouM: seriously?? So I might've been worried for nothing.....Oh goodness. So ideally I won't have to change anything and thanks to everyone's suggestions there are some amazing things I can add! Or I'll end up changing it anyways but still use everyone's suggestions as snacks and apps Smiley smile

@Jacks: Since you think they are filling, would you want to eat them at 3?

    Edit: spelling

Mini meatballs, Mac n cheese balls, grilled cheese sandwiches that are mini triangles with tomato soup shooters. What about mini pulled pork sliders? Mini tacos with a shot of tequila?
