I am getting married Jan 18, 2020. I dont have help financially to cover a reception. But people are driving a ways to see the ceremony. I should offer them something, right?

My sister did a potluck for her reception and it was really cute!

I agree with that and the person that suggested doing something away from meal time so that you could go light.
If you want to serve alcohol, you could always look into a local store that can “rent” it out to you and you can return what’s not used for a refund. My grandparents are from a small town and do this with the local liquor store, which helps them out on wholesale prices (with a little extra for the business).

You could just try grabbing finger foods from a grocery store or like veggie platters, sandwich platters, cheese and crackers. Just something simple.

How about a build your own sandwich station? Like have different meats and cheeses set out with tomatoes, lettuce, onion, etc with nice bread. Veggie and fruit tray, chips... You can get this stuff all at Sam's or Costco very easily. Then cake and punch, maybe inexpensive champagne if you can.

Cake, coffee tea... or cupcakes, even.
If you have a little extra, add a few light finger foods.

You can do it early and have brunch or lunch. You can have a local restaurant cater trays for a small buffet.

I agree that it's a little awkward to do potluck if people are travelling a distance for the wedding (you can't just bring a crock-pot with you on a plane lol). I also agree that food is highly important! I've been to weddings that were relatively low-budget and they definitely didn't have a DJ or a lot of decor, and I don't think I even noticed. So you're totally right, those things can be skipped! One wedding did a baked potato bar (Build your own baked potato) and had mac and cheese, and the other one had chick-fil-a trays, which was a hit with a lot of the younger guests. Food is a must, but there are lots of options!

What did your invitation say? Did it say something to follow?

Does your ceremony site offer a room, you could always order some pizzas and soda? And some cake.
