Including my teen daughter

Brenda, on August 25, 2023 at 1:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
Hi all! I have 2 kids from my previous marriage and I am getting married again. I want my kids included in the wedding. My 13 year old daughter ( who will be 14 at the time of the wedding) requested she be the flower girl. I asked if she was sure and if she wanted to be a bridesmaid. She said nope she wants to the the flower girl.
We then brainstormed to try and find a cool theme for her as a flower girl and all we could come up with was to pass tiny bottles of tequila instead of throwing flower petals. Any other ideas? I could really use some help.

As a guest. I would feel a little confused why I was being handed a small bottle of tequila by a 14 year old at the start of the ceremony. Why can’t she do flowers? I think as long as she’s in an age appropriate dress(and not like a 5 year old’s flower girl/Easter dress), it should be fine.

I'm not sure having a minor pass out alcohol during a wedding ceremony is the best idea, honestly. What if she passed out individual flowers to people as she walked up the aisle?

I don’t know what tequila has to do with a flower girl or that tequila or the role is appropriate for a 14 year old. What’s her main objection to being a bridesmaid or junior bridesmaid ? If she objects to holding or distributing flowers, she’s not really a flower girl, is she?

If she insists on the title, I’d probably just have her walk in the procession holding flowers.

I must agree that passing out liquor at all, much less by a 14 year old, doesn't seem like a good idea on several level - 1. if your ceremony is at a house of worship and not a venue with a liquor license liquor will be a problem on the premises, and 2. as she is a minor, she should not be in possession of liquor at all. There are liquor laws that govern this - my in-laws owned a bar and the laws are very strict. My suggestion would be to dress her as a Junior Bridesmaid in an age-appropriate ensemble but give her a basket of flowers, to either drop or instead of a bouquet, and perhaps a headband of flowers in her hair. Position her in the front of the procession where a flower girl might usually be. At my recent, very simple and less formal, convalidation wedding ceremony, our 9 year old granddaughter was dressed in a lace dress and carried a basket with a flower arrangement. She wasn't exactly in the wedding party which consisted of our son as Best Man and my BFF as Matron of Honor( the kids brought the Offertory bread and wine to the altar) but I wanted to her feel like the "Flower Girl" and she was pleased! Best of luck!!

What does she think she'll wear? Is there a specific color you're looking for? Short or long? I could help you pick a few dress options for her if you want

Did your daughter explain why she wants to be a flower girl? Is it that she does not want to stand up with you during the whole ceremony? The question arises in part because you are no longer talking about flowers or petals.

I had a 12 year old flower girl, and she handed out long stem white roses to each guest at the aisle side seat. It was classy instead of childish.

If you're looking for something fun/funny, maybe you could do something like the "flower men" do where they wear sunglasses and have a fanny-pack or briefcase of flower petals and a fun song as they throw them.

So to answer a few questions, I asked her if she wanted to be involved and if so what does she want to do. She stated "flower girl" but different. Her original wardrobe idea was spider man but I did have to say no.

See she has had a few medical conditions (not mental if anyone is thinking that) that kept her from being flower girl at her uncles wedding. I also feel like I have to add, this won't be a traditional wedding and will most likely be held at a private residence. I do plan on having kinda like cocktails before the ceremony so guest have something to do while waiting. We are also not a traditional white family who frown upon older kids handling alcohol. We all handle alcohol as kids for our parents.

We are looking for something fun that involves her. This is the role she chose and we are okay with it.
