inappropriate recessional?

Lora, on January 16, 2014 at 9:07 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

FH and I have both agree that we want to walk out as a married couple to "marry you" by bruno mars.

I've had a couple people tell me this is bad because he basically mocks marriage the whole song and I've also seen it on several "never play this at your wedding" lists.

bad form?! or would you??

I just looked up the lyrics and it does seem to mock marriage. I think I would avoid it.

If you like it, go for it! It's such a fun, happy song Smiley smile

Our recessional was "Sex on Fire" by Kings of Leon and preformed instrumentally by the Vitamin String Quartet. You can't get more inappropriate than that! It started off as a joke to get a rise out of my mom, but then my H and I decided it was awesome! Only about 5 of my guest even knew the song, everyone else thought it was a really pretty violin piece.

I think it's fine. I always looked at the song as more of a spontaneous we want to get married than a mockery of marriage. It is peppy and fun which is always good. The only issue that I would have personally is the lines about patron and drinking. I think my grandma would have issues with that lol, but if your guests are cool with that, then go for it.

I never thought of it to be mocking marriage, but I did just read the lyrics and definitely felt like he was making fun of how dumb it is to get married and just wasting cash.

I wonder if you could find an instrumental version of the song if you really like it.

@Lora -- I would get any of your music cleared by your church before you get your heart set on it. this song would definitely not fly in my church

it is an upbeat song ... maybe you could use a non-lyrical version

If you like it, then play it! I guess I never got that he's making fun of marriage in the song. But if you like it and/or the song has special meaning play it.

I'm listening to it now with out lyrics lol it sounds REALLY weird... has all these little like sweeps where there should be lyrics lol

I think we'll just switch it isn't appropriate. One of the girls in my office said "jeeeeze why don't you just use gorilla by bruno instead?!" I'm a little offended...

I love that song, my friend used this for her recessional and nobody missed a beat or did a sourpuss face.

It is a very upbeat/fun song, but I can see how some would be offended by the lyrics.

It is your day though, so do what makes you happy! You should be able to find an instrumental version of the song if you're worried about the lyrics.

Yup... double check with your church and maybe your parents to see what they think about the lyrics, unless you find an instrumental version that you like. I know FH wanted to use Runaway by The Corrs as the song I came down the aisle to, until we realised the second verse talks about sleeping together and thought that might be a bit awkward. We couldn't find a professional instrumental version we liked so had to nix that song.

Erin - I've never heard that song before I'm listening to it now. lol

Yea my parents wouldn't care if we used sex and candy as the song I came down the isle to lol, but his parents might have a hard time with Marry you.

OTW - I've seen that one so many times and still everytime I weep openly lol not watching it in the office (again!) haha

It's a great, fun song. But after listening hard to the lyrics, I chose not to have it. FH wants it as the song for our wedding trailer, but I said no. In any other context other than the recessional, I'd say go for it. But that's just my opinion

Don't the lyrics talk about getting married when you're trashed and if you want to break up the next morning, no big deal?

Is that really the spirit you want to bring to your marriage?

While I have you all here talking about songs... FH wants to use beautiful things by gungor, which is super beautiful and a song I really like but I don't think its super weddingy or beautiful for a wedding because its about jesus not the bride and I feel bad letting people assume its about me rather than jesus.
