In the evening or afternoon?

BecomingBailey, on May 15, 2016 at 8:27 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

We've decided on 5 O'clock for our ceremony start time and are about to order invites. So the question up in the air is, is it 5 in the afternoon or 5 in the evening? I already know what google tells me, I am just curious of your opinions, what you put on your invite or what you typically see?

Technically it's afternoon. I looked it up. 6 is evening, 5 is still considered afternoon.

I would say evening. We said afternoon for our four o'clock start time. Also out of curiosity, when are you sending your invites out?

I would say evening. 5 in the afternoon doesn't sound right to me.

ETA: definitely use the appropriate one though. If 5 is technically the afternoon, then say afternoon Smiley smile

Afternoon. It may not sound right, but that's what it is.

I don't know what is technically correct, but I think in this case that evening sounds better.

Or if you worried just say 5:00 pm Smiley winking

Go with whatever's technically correct, but in August it stays light so late that I think afternoon would be fine.

I remember my sister went through this. Although 6:00 and up is technically evening, she did research and 5:00-6:00 seemed to be an "in between " area. Her ceremony was at 5:30; since it was a very formal wedding, she went with evening.

Yeah I feel like evening sounds better but technically it is supposed to be afternoon. I have 2 lines to fill for symmetry purposes so if I just put 5 o'clock, it wouldn't look right.

@amber we are sending them the end of this month with an RSVP date of July 17 which gives about a month and a half to RSVP. We have to have our guest count to the venue by July 26th so this gives us a few days to hunt everyone down haha

I may be a little behind on the invites but we just had a hard time finding something we were happy with.

@beach babe that is something that I'm finding on google. Some people say depending on the formality, you could make 5 afternoon or evening. We are a little more casual but afternoon still doesn't sound right to me.

@becomingbailey I would wait to sent them out until a month out. 6 weeks is a long time and people might just plain forget to RSVP. When they get it they'll know if they have plans or not so don't need 6 weeks to decide... I did a month and felt that was long because RSVP week we still had 1/2 no RSVPs and many just said they forgot

I had the same issue since my ceremony is at 5:30 and one etiquette site I checked said if it's a more formal event, use evening. More casual, use afternoon
