Illusion neckline

Jen, on September 24, 2021 at 2:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
I posted this question in a previous post about other alteration issues but wanted some more feedback if possible.

My dress has an illusion neckline and it doesn’t sit flat on my chest. The seamstress said it can’t be altered tighter. It also has a very noticeable white thread which is all I can see when I look at it. The way it is shaped also makes me feel like my boobs are saggy.
I was debating having it removed. At first the seamstress said no way and thought it would mess with the structure of the dress but then realized that with the shoulders siting the way they do on me that’s is where the structure truly is. Also if it was structural why would it be so loose?? She said that we would wait until I go for my pick up appointment, which is this coming Thursday when everything is done and see if I still wanted it removed. If so she would remove it for me. Once removed there is no going back so she is still hesitant as am I. I keeping going back and forth on doing it or not.
Have any of you had illusion mesh removed from your dress? Have any thoughts on removing or keeping it? Ways to make it work otherwise?
I bought flash tape (double sided clear body tape) to either try and make the mesh sit flat (not sure how if it’s so loose) or help the lace appliqué pieces on top sit flat if they pop up after removing the mesh.
I will post two photos of the dress with the illusion mesh and then under those the same two photos I photoshopped the mesh out. Also note that my dress lining was just pinned in these photos and not altered yet so it’s not finished and a bit crooked lol.
Thank for you help!

I definitely like the look of the dress without the illusion better!

It appears that they used way too much mesh. I would also consider boob tape to see if having that lift and support might improve how the dress sits. However I do see what she means by it changing the structure. Because it looks like the appliqués over the bodice are attached to the mesh so removing that would drastically alter the appearance. Not sure how you would go about fixing that because anything you do with the neckline is a major risk. It’s a design flaw on their part.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s not really a design flaw, the dress was illusion on the entire front except for the tiny cups but being bigger chested I was hesitant to buy the dress and not be covered. They assured me I could add larger cups and it would all be ok. It was not so I had to have the dress lined on front. They lied, and I shouldn’t have trusted them. Here’s what it is supposed to look like.

The seamstress said she would cut around the appliqués so they wouldn’t be cut off or altered but I may need tape to have them lay flat, which I bought. Also my boobs are all the way up it just doesn’t look like it because the mesh is a scoop neck and makes me look saggy. I actually have push up cups sewn into the dress in the photos I posted! Lol.

That mesh does nothing for the look of the dress and it will bother you ALL day if you leave it. I say get rid of it.

It appears to me that the mesh is bunching because your shoulders are a bit more narrow than the dress could accommodate. I would vote to remove the illusion/mesh, but it's gorgeous either way!!!

Yes I do have very narrow shoulders! Which doesn’t go with supporting a very large chest lol. Thanks for your input!

It looks much better without the illusion! I would take it to multiple seamstresses if you have the time for a second opinion. There has to be a way to get rid of it. I could be a bit biased, though, because I tried on a few dresses with illusion necklines, and they all made me itch.

I don’t have time but it was a nice idea. It is not that she won’t do it she just wanted to make sure I knew it wasn’t reversible if I didn’t like it and at first thought the dress would t stay up but as we can all see with how baggy it is it’s not holding up anything.

Remove the illusion! I like it some dresses but for the most part, no. I removed it on mine.

Way better without, and if you keep it, it’s likely going to bother you the whole day. She can keep enough of the edge of the mesh that the lace doesn’t fall apart, otherwise I don’t see how it’s structural. Your shoulders are holding the dress in place. You may need a little tape at the shoulders and bust line just to keep everything in place on the big day, but that’s easy. Get rid of that baggy mesh!

Thank you Samantha, I think so too. Someone else suggested pulling it tight and sewing it under the lace on each side. I am going to suggest this to my seamstress and if it doesn’t sit right still pretty sure it’s coming off!

I know I’m like 3 years late to this discussion, but if you happen to see this comment, can you let me know what you decided to do? I’m 1 week away from my wedding and I’m starting to panic because I suddenly think I want mine removed too, but I don’t have like any time left to do too much about it 🥲 mine is exactly like yours and doesn’t sit flat on my chest.
