Illusion Neckline from HELL

Future Mrs. Weaver, on February 26, 2015 at 9:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28

I loooove love loooove my dress. It is everything I could ever ask for. Except one thing.

I have very sensitive skin, and I realized at my most recent try on that, my dresses Illusion neckline rubs me BRIGHT red. Around my neckline and ESPECIALLY the arms. I dont have a picture of this, but I will post a picture of me in the dress(sorry they are retched pictures)

what should I do??? Should I consider taking away the illusion neckline? I love it, but I could PROBABLY do without it and not be too heart broken.

Any advice or experience would be GREATLY apreciated. Thank you

That is a pretty dress and could definitely be pretty without the neckline, but I'm sure it'd be sad to get rid of it. I know I'm prone to things like that too, I was pretty careful about that when trying on dresses, at one store, the first one was irritating so in the pictures of all the remaining dresses my skin was bright red! Maybe a little lotion on your skin would help?? I'm really not sure if that'd do much but it's worth a shot!

Maybe rub a very small amount of coconut oil (all natural and it shouldn't stain) over the area that gets red and then try the dress on to see if that helps. It helps moisturize. If you try it, I'll warn you that you want to use it sparingly. A little bit goes a very long way.

I have been told to use like body glide for runners or something like that to rub there, but i am afraid putting anything on my skin will cause a bigger irritation. My seamstress saud she has put a clear rubber material over the edges for a girl before, soooorta like a ckear bra srap, but much softer and less noticible, but she said you have to glue it there. Im afraid it will just look stupid and stand out too much! I dont know what to do. I fell in love with this dress because it was similar to one i saw on greys anatomy, that i loved.

What about changing the neckline to a sweetheart?

I can't from the picture, but what material is the illusion neckline? I've heard that you can rub dryer sheets on lace to make it softer to keep it from irritating you, so I don't know if that's possible for whatever material that is?

I have lace straps that I'm worried about as well--when I first tried on the dress, it didn't bother me at all or make me red, but when I tried on my dress when it came in I had some redness. I'm hoping that I can make the lace softer and prevent some of that. But I have super fair skin that gets red at anything so it may be a lost cause.

Is there any way that the seamstress can sew a thin layer underneath the illusion neckline? I have the same exact problem but with anything that has sequins around the neck. My seamstress came out and told me (while I was dress shopping) that she could sew a very thin layer of a different fabric underneath in order to alleviate the irritation if I picked a dress that ended up irritating my skin.

It is tulle, so the softner sheets wont work.

They can sew anything to it, or else it would ruin the effect. Im am probably going to just have to remove the illusion neckline, making it strapless

If anyone is interested, here is a picture we took of the dress with the illusion neckline pinned inside the dress. I think we are just going to take away the tulle illusion neckline.

I was going to say why don't you just take it away- if it's rubbing your skin and making you uncomfortable, then you don't be happy.

I know what you mean- in my every changing journey to decide on the right dress look, I had to change things based on problems like skin irritation or not realistically being able to walk in a dress. my biggest nightmare was that I'd be so uncomfortable I'd have to change out of it!

in the end I went with comfort first, then if the look made me cry and feel like a bride. it was the way to go!

warning! don't read unless you are taking if off!

btw- it's pretty with the illusion neckline, but I actually think it does more for you without it. I like it without.

I think so long as you still like the dress without it you should take it off! There is no sense in making yourself uncomfortable all day for something you don't need! I think the dress is gorgeous, with and without the illusion neckline!

Before you get rid of anything I would try different lotions, coconut oil, anything and wear something that irritates your skin in the same way to see if you can fix it. I know I would be heartbroken if I had to change my dress.

Try some body glide on a small patch of skin and check your reaction.

Try maybe a chaffing lotion.. they are usually a gel that turns into like a powdery feel and don't leave any residue. I love the illusion neckline!

You could also line the neckline with a skin-toned silk or other fabric that you're not sensitive to! If it's just the edges, lining them with ribbon might be even easier. Have you talked to a seamstress about this?

I usually like illusion neck lines but I think I like this one more without it. Definitely agree with PP's about seeing if lotion or a bit of coconut oil will calm your skin enough to keep the dress as is first though.

I agree with Megan, I think I actually like your dress without the illusion neckline. Plus, it makes your dress one of a kind AND you'll be comfortable and not red in all your pictures Smiley smile

Just go without the neckline. I have the same issue as you - if my skin gets rubbed around my neck or chest it will turn bright strawberry red and splotch like I have some kind of infection. I have to be really careful with things like scarves and fabrics like lace. You could always do a statement necklace in lieu of the illusion neckline.

You can try baby powder too. That's what we use on dance costumes that itch and irritate.
