If you are thinking about using Jos A. Bank for your GM suits... think again...

*Mrs_D*, on August 20, 2014 at 3:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

We decided, after searching and searching for the perfect suit for our groomsmen, to go with Jos A. Bank. Our GM are wearing just pants and a vest with a nice white dress shirt underneath, and out of everywhere we looked, we liked the outfits Jos A. Bank had to offer.

Well, we have had NOTHING but trouble. I think it is really a branch by branch situation... but seriously just ISSUES. First things first: they did not put our GM outfits in a computer... it is literally written on a piece of paper in a binder at a specific jos a bank location. If they want the promotional price, they have to go to THAT location. Whatever, we just told all our GM to get to that one. I thought it was old school, but understand that these people work off commission, so I am sure they want them purchased at THAT location. I was annoyed but that was the least of our problems. I am just so fed up with this place, I could scream. Get ready for a long ass rant (cont in comments...)

Groomsmen #1 goes in. He tells them he is part of our party, and asks them to show him what he needs to get. The person has no idea what he is talking about. He pulls up the email FH sent to his GM on his phone which lists the outfit and says “this is what I need”. The person gets him the outfit, but then tells him it will be $300 (we were told it would be $175, and have paperwork- which is in that binder, which says so). I have to call the branch and tell them who I am, and where they can find the paperwork with the document that has our information on it… I literally have to tell them where to locate something they certainly should know how to find.

Groomsmen #2- SAME ISSUE. He goes in, tells them he is part of our wedding party, they have no idea where to find the information. GM calls FH, who calls the branch and tells him where to find that fucking binder with our sheet in it (like seriously!? Are these people trained!?) We thought that was the end of it. Nope, we get a call from GM and he asks “Hey, I thought it was going to be $175, this guy is telling me it is going to be $400. FH gets on the phone with the guy who is trying to sell him THE ENTIRE THREE PIECE SUIT! The sheet clearly states that the GM just need the pants and vest. WTF.

This was the last straw. GM #3 went in a few weeks ago when he was in town for FH’s bachelor party. He lives out of town, in CA, and so stopped in to purchase the suit when here. For some odd reason, instead of just purchasing the suit, the woman asked him to buy a giftcard and they would use that to buy the suit. She said there was some promotion going on and he would get a better deal. Sound fishy to me, and I GM didn’t question it… because he just thought hr was going to save some money or whatever. Well, today, he was talking to FH, and FH asked if he had received the suit yet (they were going to ship it to him). He said he had not heard from them and was going to call them. Well, he calls them, and apparently they were holding his suit because the giftcard he purchased was enough to cover the suit, but not enough for sales tax. A few problems with this other than the obvious- the woman told him this was a good plan- in MN, we DON’T HAVE SALES TAX ON CLOTHES. In addition, they never called GM to tell him about this problem, he had to call to check on the status of his suit!!! GM was on the phone with this branch, but they had to call him back because “they were too busy”, they called him back, got his information, called him again- because they took his information down WRONG, then he got a call from customer service. At the end his suit will be shipped out tomorrow, but SERIOUSLY?! WTF Is wrong with this place!?

Now, the real icing on the cake is this: I call the branch RIGHT when I hear about this. The manager told me he would give me a call back in 20 mins because the store was very busy. That was 3 hours ago. I then called the customer service like for Jos A Bank. Left them a message because the customer service line was too busy as well. I CAN’T EVEN GET A HOLD OF SOMEONE TO COMPLAIN!

Well, FH and I will be going in this weekend to complain. What a load of crap. Our GM and FH, all together, will be spending well over $1200 there, and to be treated this way is just ridiculous.

Sorry for the longest rant ever, but 45 days out and I am just feeling the pressure. ARGH.

Ugh what a mess! I'm sure like DB, it's a store to store thing - but we won't be going there. I'm angry for you! What a headache....

I had issues with our tuxes too. We have a larger groomsmen and he was being measured and the guy actually asked him if he needed to be able to do up the jacket because he was too lazy to continue trying different sizes, really?! that's so rude! My husbands tie was wrinkled to shit as well and the overall customer service was bleh...I'm sorry you had a tough time too, hopefully they will compensate somehow.

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up! We're doing our suits there too. They should only be about $200 each. And you know, I didn't even think about the fact that they only have the forms at one store, which considering every groomsman is in a different city, will obviously not work. I'll have to give them a call about that. I guess I just figured that since they put tux orders in the computer, they would do the same for suits. I'll be honest, the first time I went in there, the sales guy REFUSED to even show me anything except the most expensive suit in the entire store. He claimed that they didnt have anything else in navy blue, which is a load of crap. I went back a couple months later, told the manager about my last experience, and she rectified it and gave us an awesome experience.

Edit: also, we gave the guys a deadline to GET the suits by the end of October for our March wedding. I'm not dealing with all that a month before.

I've heard they're not great, either. I had a friend warn me here (in MN). If you are in the midwest near any Savvi stores, they did a fab job for our wedding. Suits looked amazing and were around the same price as Men's Wearhouse (but more selection of grey suits at Savvi).

Sorry you've had a terrible time with them!

I wish I had thought of Savvi, Elfie... I am also in MN, and after we searched and searched what we thought was every store for the perfect navy suit (really it was the vest we had a hard time finding), and then picked Jos A Bank, we got a flyer from a Savvi and were like "ah... we should have checked them out too!"

Yeah, they are just awful. Here we are, almost 5 hours later... still no call from the store OR the customer service line. WTF.

KirstenMichelle- you have the right idea... guys are just so lackadaisical about everything. FH keeps bugging them to get these damn things! They are all like "do you really think I wouldn't get the suit?" Well, maybe not on purpose... but I don't want to chance it. We are 45 days out guys, COME ON!

Jos A Bank is HORRIBLE...their suits just plain suck. FH bought one there about 3 years ago and the quality is just awful...the first time it went to the dry cleaner, it wrinkled just above the pocket of the lapel and then I took it to another one that was able to (somewhat) smooth it out but it happened again the next time I took it the same cleaner and it happened again

We looked at the tux options there, as well. We are doing gray tuxes and Jos. A. Bank has a really nice one that we like. When we went to find out information about them, the woman was super rude and acted like she was being bothered. We asked about any way for my fiance to try on the tux or a similar style suit before we made a decision (it's a slim fit tux and we weren't sure about it) and she wasn't accommodating AT ALL. No helpful suggestions...just a no. She basically just threw a book in our face and said, "Here's our options." Thankfully, with a bit of research, we found a bridal shop nearby who rents out the exact same tux. The bridal shop was GREAT! Very nice and answered all of our questions...and for a lot less than what Jos. A. Bank rents theirs for.

A little update- NO CALL from customer service or the shop. I figured I would call customer service again, because clearly the shop was no help, I had dealt with the manager before (as a customer, not like, a complainer), and he was just a doofus, so I figured a complaint to customer service would go farther.

I called customer service again, and talked with someone who was very nice and apologetic. I explained everything, and he took everything down and let me know he would be calling the regional sales manager and telling him about the situation, and that person would then be calling me (usually in one to three days). He said they would make it right. Lets just see where this goes. If I don't hear from them by early next week, I will be making a NASTY call. I was very nice yesterday but if I don't get a call back they will be getting a different side of me.

I took a huge risk and ordered FH's and his BM's suits online from Macy's during their one day sale last weekend. They came last night and they are gorgeous. FH's fits him really well and will only need a small amount of alterations (hem/cuffs). They are Kenneth Cole Reaction, originally $350 a piece, on sale for $89.00. I totally lucked out.

Karen: I was thinking of doing the same thing before, but getting any kind of info out of our guys (like measurements) is like pulling teeth. Plus, I wanted a specific color navy and I'm bad at ordering things like that online

I have to step in here. My daughters boyfriend works at the local Jos. A Banks and he works hard, stays late to accomodate customers and gets very little pay. He also gets treated like shit but a lot of brides wanting things that they can't get or can't afford. I agree, I think it's store to store like DB. I am sorry you are having this trouble and you are right to complain. They cannot fix issues at individual stores if they dont know about the issues. Let's just not lump all Jos. A. Banks stores and employees into one pile.

I was going to order my ties through them and they gave me complete hell. Tried telling me they only carried the basic colors and couldn't order teal/turquoise for me. Barely even tried to help me when I went in.

Mrs Gierman, I think I made clear in my OP that, like DP, it very well could be store to store... however, based on the other ladies here... sounds like many of us have had issues. Sorry, but just because your daughter's boyfriend is a hard worker doesn't mean as a general statement you should avoid Jos A. Bank... like as a general statement, I would say avoid DB.

At the particular store we went to, there is an AWESOME sales guy. He is a hard worker, he has always been nice when we went in, and has made our Jos A. Bank experience less painful. Does that make me hate Jos A. Bank less? Nope. I am assuming he is like your daughters boyfriend... he is surrounded by a bunch of idiots.

I had small issues with MW when dealing with them. They don't do thing as archaeic has Jos A. Banks (they do put things in a company wide system so our suit selections were able to be brought up at different stores) but we did have problems the DAY BEFORE the wedding. If we hadn't have gone into the store that day for another reason, then we wouldn't have known the problem existed till the wedding day.

Everything worked out fine and even BETTER than I originally planned.

It will all work out. Try not to stress.

Jos. A. Banks screwed us over, too. They lost our order and all of the measurements. They had no record of us at all. The regional manager was of no assistance.

We went over to Men's Warehouse and, surprisingly, had a wonderful experience. The tuxes fit even better. They offered slim & regular cut in the same tux (which we needed.)

I'm sure it does vary by location. However, we won't be going to Jos. A. Banks for anything ever again.

Seriously, this just keeps getting better and better (worse and worse actually, but... ya know...)

I just get a call from the Jos A. Bank Branch. I figured it was a call regarding my issues. Nope, totally unrelated. It was just one of the sales associates who wanted to f/u on my wedding party. The guy leaves me a message that says "we need to get A, B, C, and D in here to get their suits for your wedding, and E came in and got his suit, but for some reason he didn't know he needed to pre-pay for it so he didn't pay for it, so we can't order it for him till we get a credit card from him. Can you call me back?" Well, for one, A, B, and C had all been in and gotten their suits. D is the only one we are waiting on, and FH is literally bringing him in there tomorrow night to get it...

As for E... why would HE know he needs to pre-pay for it??? The suit is ordered, then is delivered to the store for alterations... so why would he assume he pays for it now rather than later!? I would assume the SALES ASSOCIATE would tell him "hey you need to pay now rather than when you pick it up, so we will need you to pay for that now." Nope, didn't happen.

I just got off the phone with they guy at the branch. He was like, Oh, well nobody wrote anything down about the three who already got their suits... and I don't know why E was not told he had to pre-pay, but "he just should have known he had to pay for the suit before we sent the order out". Ohhhh ok. I told him that was ridiculous, and he should not have assumed anything, but rather the associate should have told him they needed something from him. Regardless, I let my GM know they would need to call and give them the card before the suit would get ordered. JESUS WHAT A MESS!

FUCK, YOU GUYS. I have HAD IT with this company.
