I want (but can't afford) a videographer :(

AmandaK, on July 10, 2017 at 2:13 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 59

Just a post to share that I am sad I got caught up in the trap of watching all of these beautiful wedding clips a friend does (owns his photography/videography business in Toledo, OH) on FB. Checked out his pricing today and packages start at $1,500 (ceremony only) and go up to $3,500 without add-ons. I would like to have videography but unfortunately cannot afford the extra cost.

Weddings are expensive.

-end rant-

I would look around. We found a videographer that has been doing it for 20 plus years and we are paying $1200 for 6 hours of coverage.

I know it's expensive but that's pretty reasonable for good videography.

That's about how much I'm paying ($3000) for video which includes full ceremony, 10 hours of video, and edited with music and whatnot. And that's the discounted price because we're using their photographers as well.

My friend in another state paid about $3500 for her videography as well. He made a short music video style for guests to watch and then a longer edited one for her & her hubs.

    It's totally worth it.

Those are your memories you're paying for.

It would be amazing if life were cheaper in general so we could all spend time having amazing experiences and loving it.

From what I've heard most people watch their wedding video the day after, on their first anniversary, and that's about it. I have two good friends that had each others brothers video their ceremony (since they couldn't see it from the beginning). Could you perhaps borrow or even buy a camera and ask a member is the wedding parties spouse to do it? I know friendors are super frowned upon. I think this might be an acception.

@Christy - we hired our videographer for their least expensive package, which gets us one shooter for 6 hours, so he'll be there from first look until cake cutting.

If it's not in your budget, don't get a videographer. Think of how often you'll actually watch your video vs how much it'll cost. I know it sucks but very few people re-watch their wedding video more than once or twice. One of your guests may record it on their cell phone. I know its not the same but at least it'll be something. You could probably put the money you'd spend on a good videographer towards something else in your wedding.

It was a meme Jaci, not everything is so serious. I'm glad your situation worked out and you were able to get one!

Sounds like OP cant afford one.

Awesome suggestions ladies! I posted in the FB group (I am a part of the Northwest Ohio, and Toledo groups) to maybe get some ideas. If someone is willing to work on budget it's a consideration as I would like to have even a short video, but I cannot afford a $1,500 minimum, and was finding that as listed for most of the local vendors.

Crossing fingers, but if it doesn't work out I do have an awesome photog.

That's not true! I've seen a lot of beautiful videos, they just are all pretty much the same and not for me. To each their own. I didn't want that added cost either, even if I had wanted one.

@OGJaci, I will contact Brian and see if there is any interest. I appreciate the recommendation.

Following! I'm in the same boat- I told myself I'd never watch it but just the idea of my kids/ grandkids being able to see it makes me want to book one.

It's one of those things, if you can't afford a good one, skip it.

Going off what @Jay said... It's great if you can make it work in your budget but it would be more of a waste to spend $1,500 and have a crappy video then to not have it at all. Just be very careful and do your research!

Look on thumbtack.com!! You can find a videographer on there for a reasonable price.

You may be able to find a college student who could do it cheaper. It may not be as good quality, but you never know!

I feel your pain! I was originally going to try to do a diy company, but for some inexplicable reason, my card would not go through and the bank said there was no problem with my acct, so it had to be the company's system. I let it go rather than having something happen to my card this late in the game. I decided to reallocate what little we had in the budget for video into cake and flowers. Ultimately, one of my bridesmaids' brothers said he would do it for me for free. It's better than nothing!

Cheap videography is, well, unmemorable. Unfortunately, it's one of the last line items in a budget and if you plan to spend "what's leftover"? You won't love it.

I'd love to drive a Porsche. I can't afford it. I drive the Mighty Scion.

    LIfe goes on.

ETD; and FSS, don't use Thumbtack. Vendors need to pay to contact you and only beginners and sub par vendors use it.
