Hello everyone, just some advice. I insured my engagement ring and my wedding band with https://lavalier.com/ immediately after getting them. We sent my wedding band out back to Brilliant Earth for the engraving, and they destroyed it and gave us a really hard time about replacing it. We had to fight and now they are saying they will replace it, but just as an FYI. Lavalier said that they would cover 100% of the cost of the appraisal if Brilliant Earth doesn't hold up their end. That's amazing to me. I emailed them and said that during engraving my ring was destroyed and Brilliant Earth wasn't going to fix or replace it and they opened a claim and I talked to them and it will be covered 100%.

The cost was pretty cheap to get the coverage for both rings at the appraisal rate plus $1000 it was only around $80 for a year. I highly recommend them. Smiley heart Smiley diamond

I just don't feel like it's worthwhile unless you have a very expensive ring. At $80 a year, I could come close to buying myself a new ring in 12 years!

I only insure things I can't afford to replace myself. Insurance is in business to make money, not to help you. So in the long run, most people lose money by purchasing insurance.

That's your choice. I already had a need for it and no I could not afford to buy a new ring and we aren't even married so for us, the $80 to cover both my rings was totally worth it. My ring was a lot more than yours (doing the math) so again for us it was worth it. This is just advice for people with rings that they can't afford to replace.

This insurance company is going to replace this ring 100% if Brilliant Earth doesn't replace it, otherwise we wouldn't have a ring for our wedding day---this is why I posted. Smiley smile

I didn’t have insurance on my rings from my first marriage either- which were considerably more expensive.
it doesn’t matter how much they cost- only insure things you can’t afford to replace. In the long run, self insuring is much cheaper. I have home and auto insurance, that’s it.

insurance is not in business to help you, which is my point.

I am just offering up a suggestion because this place has offered to replace the cost of my wedding band should we need to get a new one.

You don't have to get insurance if you think it's a waste of money, then, of course, don't get it. For me, for us it is. I can't afford to buy a new ring before we get married. I was panicking when we got mine back from engraving.

Maybe after we are married I'll only cover one of them, but right now it was a lifesaver. Smiley winking

Why even reply then? I can't afford to replace my ring and I want a ring for my wedding. You do you and let me and others do what we want. You sound very upset about insurance. I'm sorry if something bad happened to you, but please don't comment then if you are going to try to make me or others feel bad.

The fact that I will definitely have a ring on my wedding day is very important to me. The cost I mentioned is for all of our rings, all three so for us it's worth it.

No one is forcing anyone to get it or not.

I was just trying to be nice and helpful because I have seen more than one post on here from brides upset that their rings got ruined.

It's nice that you can afford to toss away thousands of dollars, but a lot of us can not.

You are reading a lot into my words. I’m not saying that you’re wrong, and I certainly have never had a bad experience with insurance.

what I am saying is that a blanket suggestion for everyone to get insurance is a bad idea. People should be aware that insurance is not a financially sound prospect in and of itself- so they should know why they’re buying it if they choose it.

informed decisions are important, I’m sure you agree!

Here is an article I found to help people if they are considering. Ours was a bit lower than the quote here as my two rings and the extra $1000 add up to more than $4000

    http://www.jewelrywise.com/engagement-wedding/article/why-insuring-your-engagement-ring-is-so-important

I contacted our renters insurance and to add it was a lot more and they only give a percentage and then don't cover for things like engraving issues, and or anything that happens outside of the apt. So robbed in the street? No covered. Etc.

I'm not saying people must get it, so I apologize if it came off that way. I was just meaning to share a positive experience we had. I have never had an insurance place come through so fast.

Hopefully we don't have to use them, but it's nice to know it's covered.

This is a public board. You posted your opinion and I posted mine. Perhaps consider why you’re taking it so personally that someone disagrees with you?

You recommend ring insurance. I’m saying that I don’t, except under very specific circumstances, and I said why.

these boards are for informational purposes, and I’m sharing information.

Right, they aren't for fighting. Please stop. I shared a positive experience and you are fighting and telling everyone not to do it. You are stating things as fact. I never told anyone to get it. Please stop this. It's fine to disagree, it's another just to come on and fight for the sake of arguing which is what you are doing. If you were just sharing your opinion, you would have just said, for me, I have a low cost ring so it's not worth it, consider the cost. Which I assume people would do. For me, I can't afford to buy a new ring before my wedding, so the fact that it's covered when it was ruined was a positive. My post was to share a positive experience. That's all. Please stop now and I hope you have a better day or night.

    Yeah this is helpful.
For me, if you add up my ering, wedding band and the earrings he got me for Christmas then those 3 things alone add up to (at my estimate of what I know things cost) approx $15,000.00.....so paying $200 a year for $0 deductible insurance to replace any/all of those items should I need it, seems pretty reasonable to me.

I'm really glad it was helpful. I wish we could edit the title, I would change it to something else about why it was worth it for me. Smiley smile

I got my ring appraised by someone who does it in store which I suggest you find a jeweler that does them on site. I’ve heard horror stories of diamonds being switched out. I highly suggest you find a jeweler that does them while you wait. We have a jeweler that does it in store once a month, made an appt and took him an hour to look at it and then about a week or so to get the official report. Pretty cool to hear them talk about it; my ring is 100 years old so I found out a lot about the diamonds in my ring (i.e. type of cut, timeframe of when it was made, etc).

That's super cool. Our appraisal came with the rings when we bought them, they also do it right there in the store in front of you. I hate that we even have to worry about people doing stuff like switching diamonds out etc.

I love to hear about yours! 100 years? WOW how cool. Smiley smile

This article was very helpful! And I think the original post was also very helpful and positive. Even though we have the extension thru homeowners that will cover the full value of the ring we still got a seperate jewelry policy on it just to be extra careful so I’m glad you posted your experience as I was always curious about what the actual outcome would be if something were to happen
as to what PP said, do we NEED to insure any of our jewelry ? No. But is it nice to know that for minimal money every month I’m covered if something happens to my rings? Yes ! I find a bit of relief in knowing that my insurance will pay instead of having to come out of pocket to replace it

I got our insurance through Jewelers Mutual for $25/year. I would be ticked off if anything happened to our rings and we had no recourse!

Actually now that I think about it I don't think I left it there. They measured everything and wrote it down. They did ask if I could get the exact weights from Kays, which I tried to but Kays is useless, they just gave a range of points for the center stone, nothing more specific than what I already knew and not even the right number of tiny diamonds. Then I brought it back for a second opinion and to drop the paperwork from Kays off then finally got my report after a week, but I think I had my ring, I don't remember missing it and I think it would've been weird not having it at Kays and asking for paperwork. Why does October feel like a million years ago lol?

My poor fiancé! I sent him on a wild goose chase for sure! However, he knew for sometime that I wanted a vintage ring and good thing I have a close friend that is a jeweler! So I know for a fact she helped him. I should clarify the setting is 100 years old, but the center stone is new, so I have my something old, something new. It also has great juju (I’m big on that stuff...I know weird...but I don’t want to wear something used that was lost in a divorce etc). We found out through some soul searching with the jeweler that it was an estate piece worn by a very happy woman until the end of her years. The family unfortunately needed the money from it/didn’t know what to do with it so they traded it into my jeweler who works in the diamond district in NYC! So on to me, to be worn for many more wonderful years!

    Thank you for saying this.

Homeowners and renters covers only if something happens in the home though--as far as I understand it.

I'm glad that this was helpful. I don't understand people getting upset and strongly suggesting it's a waste of money. If we didn't have insurance there's a very good chance I wouldn't have a ring to get married with. I can't afford to pay for a wedding and a second ring. We were panicked when this all happened last week. The insurance gave us peace of mind. Smiley smile
