i Recommend Ring Insurance

Stephanie, on June 3, 2018 at 2:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 41

Hello everyone, just some advice. I insured my engagement ring and my wedding band with https://lavalier.com/ immediately after getting them. We sent my wedding band out back to Brilliant Earth for the engraving, and they destroyed it and gave us a really hard time about replacing it. We had to fight and now they are saying they will replace it, but just as an FYI. Lavalier said that they would cover 100% of the cost of the appraisal if Brilliant Earth doesn't hold up their end. That's amazing to me. I emailed them and said that during engraving my ring was destroyed and Brilliant Earth wasn't going to fix or replace it and they opened a claim and I talked to them and it will be covered 100%.

The cost was pretty cheap to get the coverage for both rings at the appraisal rate plus $1000 it was only around $80 for a year. I highly recommend them. Smiley heart Smiley diamond

Thanks for the recommendation, I may look into them when mine with Jewelers mutual is up to see how the rates compare!

Definitely! I’ve had my engagement ring for 6 months, with insurance. I just took it to be cleaned and re-dipped, and two small diamonds were missing! So glad we had the insurance!

Oy vey..see..THIS type of nonsense is why I keep bugging my FH about getting insurance the my engagement and wedding ring AND earrings he gave me for christmas...all were custom made, all are white gold with diamonds and the earrings have natural color change purple sapphires..incredible hard to find a matching pair and to replace them would be insane...BUT HE DOESN'T SEE THE POINT?!??! I know that the center stone in my wrong alone cost more than he will admit to me because I told him not to spend too much (I did research online..there is no way the center stone cost less than $8k)..and it was custom made (very unique intricate band) so I literally cannot just go into any store to get a replacement, yet he doesn't see the point because "sure they will cover the value if the gold/stone, but not the custom design work so it probably wont appraise at what i paid." *facepalm* BOYS!

It's usually a jeweler that does the appraisal, so they probably would include the custom work in the appraisal. The private jeweler I took mine to appraised it at what he paid for it at Kay's, it was custom, even though they disagreed with the color and clarity Kay's claimed the center stone was. Although Kay's didn't even write down the correct number of stones for the halo and shank, I think they used what was on the starter ring that we based the design off of.

Ahh that is good to know! Yes, we got it at a local jeweler not a big brand store so I thought they would include it, but he said no! That is good to know Smiley smile
Did they need your jewelry for a long time for the appraisal or was it something quick? Trying to decide if I have time to get this done before our wedding and honeymoon in 20 days!

I think it depends how busy they are, she said since I came in on a Saturday she would need longer. I would call and ask since it will vary. It took a couple of days since she wanted a second opinion since she was grading it lower. The ones in the mall send it out so it takes forever, definitely go local.

Ok, I will stop by the jeweler this week while running errands...they are the ones who designed/made it and sourced the stones for us to choose from for the ring etc. so they know the exact value and grading of the stones from GIA and weight of gold used as well so hopefully won't be too long AND I will just do it without relying on FH :p

The appraisal we got for both rings came with the ring when we got it from Brilliant Earth, I would definitely ask your jeweler. Or at the very least get it to cover the cost. They do ask for paperwork though at the insurance company I mentioned.

I find this funny because is all did some research on my center stone and was shocked at the price lmao.. but I would definitely convince him to get it insured !! The appraisal is usually more then it cost anyway so it could break even! If nothing don’t even tell him and add everything to your home owners policy! We have my rings and our watches all on home owners + seperate jewelry insurance

I recommend going to a GIA certified appraiser for the appraisal. They are specially trained in grading diamonds and other precious stones. That and call me cynical, but I wouldn't trust the place I got it from to give me an accurate appriasal, idk, that's just me lol.... My appriasal was less than $200 for a one of a kind e-ring and band, and knowing that my ring and band are fully insured helps me sleep at night, idk about ya'll, but we can't afford to replace mine if it's lost or stolen! 😳

Oh! And as someone else said, I just added a jewelry rider to my homeowner's policy, was less than $20 more a month.

The new policy with the company I mentioned is $80/year for both rings and for us our renters was a lot more to add it.

Well Brilliant Earth does a great job with appraisals the value is much higher than the cost so I'm happy with it. As well they are certified.

Yeah I don't remember exactly how much it was a month, I just remember it was pretty darn cheap considering the price of the rings.

Like I said, call me cynical... That's just my opinion, no one has to agree with me. All that matter is your insurance company has accepted the appriasal and your ring is insured!

Totally but for us Brilliant Earth is certified so it works, also since it came in for both so much higher than the cost we are covered.

Right? I agree. I recommend a ring specific place though because they cover 100% not a % of the cost like most home and renters insurance. It's up to everyone what they want to do, but definitely I think it's worth it to cover them.
