I picked up my dress and it doesn't fit??

Lauren, on August 1, 2016 at 5:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

So my dress came in a couple weeks after I ordered it at Davids Bridal and I tried it on before we took it home and it was way tighter!! I could barely breathe!! It was the same size but the manager said because it's a new dress it's stiffer. It makes sense but it was really disappointing and slightly worrying. She told me it'd fit fine if I lose 5-10 pounds so I guess I'll do that. It seems like an easy fix seeing as I have over a year but it was just disappointing. I pictured picking up my actual dress as a special thing and it sucked. Anyway this is just my sad vent lol but hey I guess a little weight loss motivation is a good thing. Although the manager would whisper every time she mentioned weight and I kind of wanted to punch her. I'm assuming it was her way of trying to be sensitive but it felt more humiliating than supportive.

The comments were obviously rude. I'd have been snarky back. You still have time to do what you need to do plus you haven't had alterations yet.

Mine was a little tight when it came in, too. It's frustrating, but it happens. You've got a lot of time to lose those 5-10 pounds, so don't panic or feel pressured to make any drastic weight loss plans. And know that it won't be the end of the world if two months before your wedding you need to either let out the seams a tiny bit or take it in. A lot of dresses end up needing alterations, and if it's just a little bit, it should be really easy to fix.

I tried a 12 when I was got my dress, which had been stretched out by who knows how many people. Then they measured me, I measured a 16 in my hips (largest section). They should have measured you, not just gotten you the size you tried on!!! My 16 was big when I first got it and then I altered it to me... probably almost to a size 12/14 by the time i finished losing the weight I WANTED TO NOT WAS FORCED TO!

Can you punch people through the phone? Because I definitely would have punched her. If they knew that, why wouldn't they have you order a size up?

That's totally weird that they didn't mention that to you. My consultant (at BHLDN) did mention that the samples aren't representative sizes and measured me to recommend sizing. It's really inappropriate for her to suggest that you need to lose 5-10 pounds in order to fit into the dress, when she didn't advise you about the correct size to buy.

Sorry that you are going through this. Unfortunately, new dresses are pretty stiff. All of the sample dresses stretch out a lot because they are tried on so much. That being said, a good salon will order the dress to your largest measurement. For me, that was my hips (which are ridiculous... Always have been).

Yeah it would have been nice if the lady who helped me pick my dress had mentioned that. The sample fit me perfectly! It was amazing. But had she mentioned a new dress would be tighter, I might have thought about getting a size up. I think I'll be fine losing weight or altering the dress but it's frustrating that this wasn't brought up beforehand as it seems like a common problem. I know I can figure it out and handle it easily it's just definitely a bummer that this information wasn't given to me until I was panicking picking up my dress!

Did they check your measurements?! I used to work at David's- your dress should fit you, if they measured incorrectly, they should order you a new dress. You shouldn't have to stress about losing weight for their mistake!

They should of also told you that they allow you exchange your dress once up until 3 months before your wedding...I bought a dress in May 2014 in a size 14 after losing 25 lbs I was able to exchange it for a size 10.

They told you to lose weight? That's so mean. I will ask them to exchange for you for sure.

@private not sure why the size of your dress is relevant? Either way .... Dry cleaning will make the dress stiff/ tight too.

My dress was too tight as well... The first seamstress I took it to told me to lose weight and she could not let it out.

I left their feeling horrible about myself. I ended up calling another seamstress and she was able to alter it and it is perfect now. I did end up losing a couple of pounds and won't need as much altered now but I did that for me.

They definitely should have measured you. Heck I'm a 12 (chest), 4 (hips) so I had to order a 12. No one is a true sample size and they need to make the dress for you.

I'm very worried about the ladies ordering dresses without getting measured....

I hope this works out for you. He weight comment was rude and unnecessary. She should have done her job and measured.

She measured me during my appointment so I dont know if the dress I got is the size closest to my measurements and she just figured they'd adjust it during alterations or something. I wish I had asked more questions about it but it seemed so straightforward and like there wasn't any concerns or issues about sizing. At least now when I have friends getting married in the future I can warn them about this!

I used to work retail in bridal so I knew that samples would get stretched out. I even told my consultant that I was not sure if I wanted a brand new one since the sample one (I could buy since it was davids bridal) fit perfect. She tried to tell me, oh they don't stretch out that much. If it's an older style you better believe that the dress is stretched out, it's just like jeans. The more you wear without washing the more stretched they get. The only time a sample would not be stretched is if it just came out.

The same thing happened to me. The sample dress fit me like a glove and I loved it! My dress was extremely tight when I got my new one. It about made me cry and definitely took away from the moment of getting my actual dress. They offered to exchange mine for the next size up after measuring me (they didn't the first visit). That dress was huge and I hated it even more. I asked if I could just have the sample from the rack at that point & they said no problem. By that time, it wasn't the same original dress though and it still fit a little snug. I ended up altering it to a 1/2 corset back which I ended up loving. David's Bridal can definitely do exchanges if you aren't happy so don't get too down. It will all work out! And that manager is straight up an unprofessional witch. So not ok for her to say that!! It was just the sample being stretched out.
