I Hate Looking at Pics of Myself

SSJKarigan, on January 3, 2017 at 12:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

I'm posting because I recently got my engagement photos back and... I hate the way I look in them. I hate my teeth and my big nose and the lighting and my stupid flat hair and my dumb-looking chin just, ugh... part of me knows that it's just me being dramatic and self-conscious, but I honestly don't know how I can drive myself to want to look at these. Has anyone experienced the same feelings? What did you do? I'm trying to make save-the-dates and I'm dreading sending anything out with these pics. Here's some examples of ones that I feel like I should love but HATE. Also, the only one I really liked is the one with me giving my FH a piggy-back ride shown here, but the lighting isn't very good... please, honest opinions.

You don't look bad at all. However, the editing of the picture to get the lighting corrected and photo enhanced could've been upped a notch.

I'm feeling the exact same way! The photos i have are gorgeous I just can't stand looking at myself, it seems like a normal thing but your photos are great I'm sure your friends and family love seeing them send them out! The photo of us should be my favorite but I wish I could just remove myself haha

The photos themselves aren't the *best*; however, you look cute in them regardless! You're right; this is a "you" issue... You have to love yourself in order to appreciate photos of yourself. We are our own worst critics. Focus on your amazing qualities... All the reasons your FH loves you Smiley smile

As a side note... Is this person doing your wedding photos? Have you seen wedding photography samples and full galleries from whoever you hired? If these are the best of your engagement photos, it makes me leery of what your wedding photos will be like. That is a comment about the photography skills/style, NOT about YOU, because YOU are cute as a button Smiley smile

I hate most of my wedding pictures, because of insecurities. That's the part you need to shrug off and go "I'm fabulous, and I'm putting this on my wall" like I did.

However, please don't take offense but I'm going to be blunt here: your photographer sucks. Those are amateur at best. Find someone new for the wedding.

@Rachel - the person who did our engagement photos is my FH's cousin who does photography as a hobby. We were trying to save money and I'm wondering if we made a mistake. He did it free of charge so it's hard to complain.

Were these done professionally? I think you look beautiful in the photos but the quality of the photos themselves seems to be lacking. I second @Rachel Langerhans that you might want to look for a different photographer to ensure your wedding photos are something you'll want to look at for years to come.

It's not you - it's the photographer IMO. These look like pictures someone took with an iPhone.

You look great in these pictures, the problem is more in your head. One thing I have tried to boost my confidence is looking at myself in the mirror everyday and telling myself "you are beautiful." Maybe it can work for you too

@GymRat.......... *sigh* Not only did my FH's cousin do these photos, but he DID use an iPhone. He said the quality was just as good. I feel so friggin stupid, and now I'm feeling irritated with my FH because he said his cousin was an excellent photographer. I had no idea he would be using an iPhone to take the pics until he showed up for our session.

I think, because of the lighting, the piggy back pic makes you look like you're 2 feet tall. :/

I agree with PP, find a professional. I'm right there with you, OP, i absolutely hate looking at myself in photos. there's only one pic I like of myself and FH pointed out that maybe it's because I look completely happy and natural in it, so I'm hoping the same will happen for my w-day.

Another reason to pay for a professional is not only will they get better pics, but they'll know how to get a better you out of you.

ETA: nvm, I see you're having a professional for the day of.

I'd feel bad about these pictures to- they are horrible.

You guys are adorable and you are beautiful.

But these pictures? these are like- facebook kidding around having fun pictures- not quality pictures.

When you hire a pro- and you get all done up- you're going to look at yourself and go "damn- I'm a fucking 15."

Well for free, they're nice casual photos to have Smiley smile A lot of wedding photography packages come with an engagement session, so you might not have to spend too much (or any) more by having another session with your wedding photographer. It's worth asking him/her about. I highly recommend an engagement session with your wedding photographer... It not only gives you a chance to see actual photos of yourselves done by your photographer so you can be sure you do love them (and that's the time you'd then get to talk with him/her about what you do/don't like, poses that you're comfortable/uncomfortable with, etc.), it gives the photographer a chance to get to know the couple and see how you interact. It's a good thing for everyone Smiley smile Additionally, I think you might be a little more confident in your beauty after seeing professional photos of yourself rather than just casual photos done by a relative Smiley smile

@SSJK- thanks for letting us know it was a "friendor". If he didn't charge, I would say don't complain but definitely hire a non-related professional for the wedding. Just tell the friend you want him to be able to enjoy the day so you hired someone.

NOW, you have NOTHING to be worried about in regards to your appearance. I thought you were so cute!! It is definitely a mind issue not the way you look. I understand I have some of the same problems. I think you are beautiful and I know your FH does as well. Congratulations and good luck finding a wedding photog Smiley smile

ETA: I just saw where you commented you already have someone else for the wedding. That's good. Smiley smile

Awww man. Well look - the good thing is you do have a professional wedding photographer. Also another good thing is you didn't pay for it! So if you REALLY wanted to do this over again, you can see if your wedding photographer has an affordable price for e-photos. Otherwise I really wouldn't sweat it! :-)

Thanks everyone - when my FH showed me that his cousin sent the photos my first thought was "These don't look professional..." but I wondered if I was just being too harsh and picky. It IS in my head that I look bad, and any poor appearance is probably the poor quality of the photos. I guess you get what you pay for, yea? And also thanks for all the support. I wanted to cry when I was looking at some of these because I felt like I looked so bad in them.

Yes, you get what you pay for ;-) Don't cry! Remember you're beautiful and your wedding (and new engagement photos, if you get new ones taken) photos will show that!

@Karigan he thinks an iPhone is just as good as a professional camera?

Does he wear a scarf and knit beanie with lenseless glasses?
