i hate how i look in my engagement pictures. Anyone redo theirs?

LMM1117, on February 20, 2018 at 4:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

My photographer is incredibly talented--I went over budget just to hire her. She just sent me my sneak peek and I HATE how I look in the pictures. I look so large. I'm a size 6 and work out regularly (mostly lifting, I don't really do cardio haha) so I know I'm not super overweight. I also don't wear a lot of makeup or hair products (I get blow outs done regularly so my hair is fairly smooth and doesn't need it) but I feel like I look like a clown and my hair looks greasy from the hair stuff my stylist put in it. It was a pretty windy day so that probably made things worse with my hair. I wanted to put photos on our wedding website as well as on Save the Dates but now I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. Did anyone get engagement photos retaken? Was it better/worth it? My fiance looks handsome as always and I just look like a hot mess next to him. Definitely planning on adding cardio so I don't look terrible on my wedding day. haha

Do you really look that bad? We can be our own worst critic. Before redoing them, show them to a close friend or post them here.

I hated the sneek peak photos from my engagement shoot too, but there were a ton of hidden gems and gorgeous photos when I got the whole portfolio.

Do you normally dislike the way you look in pictures (this is my #1 problem) or is it something specific about that photo shoot? (outfit? unusual hair style?) If you think you might just be feeling a little insecure about it (not saying that is the case), you could always post a couple here! I've always gotten honest but kind opinions that usually make me feel better.

If you get back the whole set of photos from the shoot and still hate them, I don't think anyone would blame you for having a do-over.

Does it have to do with not feeling like yourself in the pics? Maybe try going a more natural route and do your own HMU and wear an everyday outfit?

I personally wasn't in love with my engagement photos. The camera can add extra weight. And if we don't know our own angles or have a photographer to guide us in the most flattering position, the photos can come out less than desirable. I am using the photos that we have for the save the dates and wedding website, but I plan to redo the shoot indoors instead of outdoors to blow up and have on an easel when guests arrive at the wedding. I may use the same photographer or do my own, but if I do the former, I'll ask to look at the pics in between shots to make sure we're getting the shots that I like.

Post them here (you can black out the faces if you like) and we'll give you an objective opinion. Usually, we're our own worst critics and things that bother you aren't even noticeable to others.

No, I didn't feel like myself at all in the pictures. I only felt okay because my fiance kept telling me how beautiful he thought I looked which is what mattered. The makeup and hair I could have dealt with but it's how heavy I look that bothers me. I can't post the fourth--it's just too awful. Two are pictures of a picture and one is from Instagram. The additional one that's "selfie" style is what I normally look like just to show how little makeup I usually wear. I know I'm probably MOSTLY being hard on myself but honestly I dislike them so much that any compliments or reassurances (I've only shown my mom, one aunt, and matron of honor...too embarrassed to show anyone else) just make me cry more because I see how I look. The one positive thing I can say about them is that I look as happy as I feel. My fiance is the most amazing man and I'm blessed he's mine. I guess I just thought I'd look better. Dadgum Oklahoma wind didn't help matters at all. haha

You have no need to worry, those pictures are pretty and look very similar to your "normal" photo.

In the photo you marked as blah I think it is the outfit your wearing that makes the photo less than ideal. It is wrinkly, messy looking and doesn't flatter your figure, plus the color doesn't do you justice.

I'd wait and see the full set before judging them.

You honestly look beautiful. You don't look at all like a clown. Your features are just enhanced. I love the way you look in these photos. I agree the outfit doesn't flatter you in the one. It's wrinkled and it doesn't show off your figure. But aside from that, they're great. As someone who's hypercritical of her own photos, I promise I would tell you if I thought you should consider a redo.

Yeah, the wrinkles were from the car ride out to the nearby lake. I actually had a fitted long sleeve black dress picked out but my mother convinced me I should wear something more conservative. She doesn't like tight clothing. Ha. I'm waiting for the rest of the pictures before I make any decisions. I just want a few good ones then I'll be happy. Just afraid there won't be any. Ugh. Oh well, no sense in staying upset about it so I'll just take what I can get.

You are lovely, though I agree the dress was an unfortunate choice. I think they are fine and you don't need a redo.

I thought I would hate how I looked in my engagement photos. I have a tooth that didn’t come in until my freshman year, and it’s super crooked. Every time I take pictures you can tell and I hate it.
But in our photos you can’t even see it, which was my biggest worry.
I think you look amazing! And if that dress is really bothering you, you could always crop it out so you only see the top.

You look gorgeous. We are our own worst critics. I fear posting this exact same thing, I am overweight, and my stomach is a huge issue for me. We hired a PRIME photographer and we are paying for it for real. She makes everyone look good but I fear looking like an absolute cow and it's all my fault. Our photos are in April and wedding in September so I have a little time to live in the gym but I am still scared. I will be asking her to focus on face pics. Can you whittle them down to the ones you really love of the areas you don't? I think you look amazing and if you look big then I will look like an absolute whale in mine. Be grateful for what you have, you are being too hard on yourself.

You're crazy girl, that first picture is my absolute favorite. The happiness is just radiating from your smile. Don't be so hard on yourself. Ask FH which ones he likes the best, I would certainly keep them.

I hated my sneak peak too! I opened the email and I was like, oh god... oh no... please no!
But then when I got them all back I liked them. I think it’s just the initial shock. I also hate pictures in general so that probably didn’t help.

I think the pictures look great! I agree with PPs that the outfit is not the most flattering but you definitely do not look heavy by any means! If you do decide to redo the photos, my suggestion is a flowy maxi dress in a material that doesn't wrinkle. That would look great on you!

Thank you, ladies. I messaged my photographer and if I still don't like the pictures once I get the full album then we're going to do a mini session with one new outfit. I made sure to let her know that I love her work--just not my outfit. I had taken a selfie of myself in the dress before buying it and it looked MUCH more flattering in that than in the photo shoot. Oh well! haha

The top one is ADORABLE. I agree with PP that the green dress does nothing for you. 2nd favorite is cute as well. I think once you get back the album you will find enough that you like. If not, that's great she's willing do a re-shoot! I'd do a more fitted outfit, and just don't ask your mom for fashion advice!
