i cried at my dress fitting (not happy tears).. is this normal?

adilou, on February 13, 2015 at 7:50 AM Posted in Planning 0 40

Hello Smiley smile

Wondering if anyone has had an experience like this? First off, I have suffered from dress regret but I always go back to loving my original. I've had my dress for 2 yrs (long story) and I'm marrying into a very opinionated Irish family that hates it... it's also PMS time.

So I went to my first fitting and as she was pinning, I started balling!! Like had-to-stop-because-of-how-hard-I-was-crying. It didn't help that I was fighting for mirror space with a girl in a GORGEOUS $5k pnina gown, but all of a sudden, i didn't feel pretty or sexy in my dress - i felt "frumpy" and blah...

I don't know if it is the family comments about hating it getting in my head, the stress of having it for 2 yrs, the pressure of the wedding coming up so soon? having a total meltdown right now :/ I think it finally hit me that i'm getting married and of course i'm excited.. but it was really overwhelming!

I feel terrible that i feel so terrible.. is this normal at all? ugh...

It didn't happen to me, but I'm sure it's happened to a few people. It sounds like you're really overwhelmed and need some time to decompress. Smiley sad

I am hoping it's just that.. my dress needs alot of work so it's really hard to see it as pretty right now since it's got bumps and flubs all in the wrong places. :/

I agree with Janeen, I think it's more that you're overwhelmed. Buy a bottle of wine, call up the girls, put on a horror movie (it is Friday the 13th after all) and DON'T think about your wedding for a day or two!

I have yet to see a bride that didn't look radiant on her day. Seamstresses can do wonders with an ill fitting dress if you have a good one. Try not to think about how you look now, but think about how you look when you're all done up, holding flowers, and really excited to walk down that aisle.

    @Sue, that's a good idea.

i got home and was still crying. FH made me an irish coffee, it didn't work.. so he poured me a glass of wine... didn't help. it was sort of funny, by the time he was done, i had 5 different drinks sitting in front of me. I was craving carbs too so he got me garlic bread. it really was so sweet of him. Smiley smile

I dreamt about dresses all night though, go figure. i'm glad that the alterations place kept it because i probably would have showed him and asked him if he thought it was ugly... i really don't want him to see me before the day though.. so i was thankful for that!

Smiley smile thank you. you are right. i think it is just family stress and the wedding that is getting in my head. i have defended this dress to his family for 2 years now, there's got to be a reason deep down why i did! Maybe it's just the pressure because it doesn't look perfect yet.

It could be! It could be that you're so invested in proving them wrong that it HAS TO BE PERFECT. What makes the dress "perfect" is you IN IT. Go with your gut when you bought it.

Even if you were wearing a potato sack down the aisle, you would be glowing with excitement and radiating energy. You'll be absolutely gorgeous on your big day! And your dress will be amaaaaazing once alterations are finished!

I relate to this. I had to be right next to an amazingly thin and toned girl who looked like the damn model in a sample when I tried on MY dress once it came in. I already had some dress regret and having her in the shaped dress I was initially going for (but didn't get) made me feel like I def made the wrong choice. But then I focused only on me and my dress (while my mom was gushing on how perfect it was for me) and I realized there is a reason WHY I picked THIS dress and not others in the shape she was wearing. This is MY dress that fits MY body and I am going to rock the hell out of it on May 29th.

Point is- We all may not feel the prettiest at all times but on your wedding day, you will be the shining star and there will be no one else who even compares. Stick with your gut on why you choose the dress you did. You're going to be fabulous when its all said and done!

I had a really hard time at my first dress fitting - I hated it and almost went out and purchased another dress. It ended up being because the dress didn't fit right! When I went back in for my second fitting it was a ton better and the final fitting finally made me see that it was gorgeous!

Don't judge it yet! Wait until it is totally altered and then you will for sure know.

Thank you so much! you are all making me feel so much better. I know there are worse things to stress about than a wedding dress... it was so discouraging... it totally didnt help that this pretty girl was standing next to me in one of the most gorgeous dresses I had ever seen. it was ridiculous. I started crying (so embarrassed) and she went up on the pedastal and stood there for like 30 minutes while I was ina frumped up ball next to her... ugh... hopefully the next fitting will go better. I have been thinking about getting another dress... I will take everyone's advice and hold out until it fits Smiley smile

I loved my first dress but once I had to have my port put in for chemo I cried and cried and cried because you could see the port scar (which is very noticeable). The dress only had one strap but it was on the wrong side and it would have looked funny to try and add another one. I called David's Bridal and they let me exchange it for something with wide straps almost 7 months after I bought it.

Totally different scenarios but the same feeling applies. Wait until the alterations are done. I guarantee you won't be feeling the same way after your dress has been tailored for you body.

So, I hate it when people talk about MY PMS like it is any of their business at all... but I will say that what you're describing sounds a lot like PMS to me.

Just try to remember how you felt the day you bought your dress. You bought it for a reason!! And as the other girls are saying, wait until the alterations are done. Try to go back on a different time of the month.

I'm sure you were gorgeous. The comments from family make my heart break for you. That's terrible! Why don't they like your dress???

Oh and be glad you didn't spend $5,000 on a dress, that's crazy. Pnina has pretty work, but there are a lot of very pretty dresses for under $1,000 even! No offense to anyone who spend 5k on their dress, it's just a positive to consider.

Bare with this pic - i know it looks sort of terrible.. it isn't fitted or pinned at all so it is just hanging.. we are fixing the saggy boob issue stat!!! Where i am holding the back is where we were originally going to cut the back out to where it was pretty much backless but my body is having none of that - so we can't do that anymore because there's too much front of body to support.

Thank you ladies.. i have a feeling this is alot of wedding stress and PMS... but i dont know.. on SEVERAL occasions, FHs grandma, my FMIL AND FFIL have offered to take me dress shopping for another dress... i got some pretty snide remarks from his aunts too (they are essentially my only family, i dont have anyone on my side that i am close with). I am really caught in thinking they were right and also thinking that i'm just thinking that way because they got into my head.. i have no idea. :/
