It will also be beer and wine only (if they want liquor the hotel has a beach front bar that will serve liquor). I want to let them know so that guests can have cash available if they're interested.

I'm thinking of putting "Limited beer and wine bar available"

Will people understand that?

But here’s the thing, we don’t have to host them all night.

Yes, you do. Until the event ends, anyway. A wedding is a hosted event, that means you host for the duration of the event.

I would say putting it on your inserts and website should suffice. My fiance and I are doing a limited host bar, and will be paying for everyone to have 2 drinks and the rest they are on their own for. They definitely need to be told things like that, since most guests expect that the hosts are paying for all.of their drinks. Personally, my fiance and I are not drinkers but our families are, and I don't feel like we should pay for expensive drinks for them the whole night when we are not contributing to that wedding expense, but still being able to provide to the guests who would like to. Wedding ceremonies and receptions should be about spending time and celebrating the couple, not just friends and family members going to get free food and drinks.

I like this suggestion. Table service is classy and yet could be cheaper overall. Thanks for this suggestion.

I get excited when I see the words “open bar” in a wedding invite but its really not necessary to inform people ahead of time. I always bring cash for tips or incase I have to pay and don’t expect every wedding to have unlimited drinks.

Yes, you do. They are your guests and have gathered in your honour. They have taken time out of their lives to come and support your union. The reception is the "thank you" for that. It's not polite to ask them to subsidize the cost of that in any way. It is said frequently, but have the number of guests you can afford to host properly.
