How to send a thank you note to a family

Marcia, on October 14, 2020 at 12:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Hi!

I got an early wedding gift from a family with two parents and three adult children (two live at home, one lives independently with her boyfriend). Is the correct etiquette to write an individual letter to the parents and then to each adult child? Or can I write one letter for the whole family?

Hello, I think one to the whole family/household should be fine.

If the children live in the same home, I would send one. If they live separately, I would still send separate ones so each household has 1.

Etiquette says one thank you per adult but you can easily send one to the whole house addressed to all.

The only situation that would necessitate 1 per adult is if the gift is something that clearly included contributions from everyone (like a several hundred $ gift). If it is more likely that the parents signed for everyone then, even if it goes against technical etiquette, one should be just fine.

Yeah it was clearly that the parents signed it on behalf of the children, one of them is estranged from the family so I definitely know he wasn't involved in the purchasing of the gift
