How to release tables for a buffet dinner?

Jennifer, on January 11, 2017 at 8:45 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 2 33

I've been speaking with my DOC to plan out the wedding day. She suggested playing a 'bride and groom' trivia game and whoever gets the question correct first gets their table released to the buffet line. She said she's done this before and it helps the flow of the line and keeps your guests entertained and occupied rather than waiting in line for their food.

I'm not really a fan of it and I know how most of you on WW don't like wedding games, but my DOC insists that everyone just loves this game and it's always been fun. I want to skip it, but I'm not sure how it usually works with a buffet dinner. Do all the guests get up at one time, or do I have the DJ announce table numbers every 5 or 10 minutes?

I would avoid the game like the plague. Nope lol. The weddings that I have been to with buffets had the DJ release tables by number.

The weddings I've been to have the DJ release the first and last table numbers. For example, if you have 15 tables they will call table 1 and 15 up first. For some reason it makes it sound as though the wait isn't that long.

Ok I'll go with my instincts on this. I can just imagine my guests sitting there hungry and annoyed that they can't get in the line because they don't know my favorite color or where we went on our first date.

Oh God, no. Bride and groom eat first, then the "VIPs" - bridal party and family tables. Then the table numbers should just go in order. The tables should be quietly released by a staff member coming over to the table and inviting the guests to the buffet.

Our DOC quietly released the tables. There was not a huge line and it didn't take too terribly long for everyone to get food.

I would cringe so hard if I had to play a trivia game to be released to get dinner.

Our caterer released tables quietly. Kind of difficult to explain, but our room was split in half by the dance floor. So one table on the "left" was called, then one on the "right," and it alternated between the sides.

One table (pretty sure it was my mom's) decided to skip ahead and got called out by the DJ.

I really don't like the idea of making a game out of it. Go with your gut. Have the DJ release tables or the DOC if you want it to be more discreet.

Hard no on the game. Hungry, frustrated, competitive guests is not my ideal scenario. Just have the DJ announce which tables go up.

We're having song titles in our centerpieces, and our DJ will play that song when it's time for that table to go. But our DOC will also be letting people know.

Get a new DOC since she has zero clue about this and god knows what else. . Have the maitre D invite tables, IN ORDER, to the buffets.

    It's not the hunger games...

That's a big "NO", I think the game would take up precious buffet time, if she doesn't know how to release tables for a buffet I would reconsider using her.

Every wedding I've ever been to, save one, has been a buffet. The DJ always releases the tables in order.

FH is a DJ, and what usually happens is they go around (when they're acting as DOC) releasing the tables quietly.

One thing that brides like to do sometimes is assign each table a song - when that song plays they can go get their food.

I would get a different DOC. I couldn't imagine playing such a game. And i can't imagine the DJ screaming out table numbers either. The DOC or maitre d usually quietly walk over to table and let them know to head to buffet. A DOC should know all about this stuff so that's really scary.

UMMM absolutely not! Tell that DOC no. I'm having a buffet too and we're going have two tables with the foods so we'll be able to call 3-4 tables at a time.

I think it calls even more attention to the fact that not everyone is eating at the same time. I'm with those who are wondering about the experience level of this DOC (is she a venue employee or did you hire her privately?).

    PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!

I went to a wedding where they did this, but it wasn't bride and groom trivia it was just stupid contests to see which table got to go eat. Thankfully I had a penny from 1959 in my purse for the "Which table has the oldest coin" game or I might still be waiting for my dinner.

I was finished my dinner before the parents of the groom's table was dismissed. It was nonsense. Tell them no.

I hate how everything gets turned into something so much more complicated than it needs to be. I don't need games to wait for my food. I'm an adult and am capable of carrying on a conversation and/or passing the time on my own without someone thinking they're helping me.

Don't do it. It sounds like in elementary school when you had to do trivia games or the quiet game to see which desk pod could line up for lunch first.
