How to plan a micro wedding?

Alisa, on April 18, 2020 at 10:37 AM Posted in Planning 1 3

Hi, We were planning to have a 100 person wedding at a country club in upstate New York on 7/18/2020 but I don't feel comfortable having such a large crowd now because of coronavirus. We'd still like to get married so I'm thinking about having a micro wedding instead of approximately 20 guests, with immediate family and one to two friends. It seems like my venue is able to work with us but there are some details I'm not sure about.

Do micro weddings have a cocktail hour?

When do you take photos? I didn't want to spoil the "first look."

How many hours should do we need for the event from start to finish?

Do you still have dancing?

We had a 5 hour micro wedding planned before all this mess. We had a ceremony with all the floral designs. A cocktail hour with open bar, plated dinner with lush florals, glass chargers, colors napkins, etc...We are not big dancing fans so we hired a violinist and a guitarist to play throughout the evening. Photography can be set up however you want. Just because it is a smaller wedding, does not mean you can't have everything else a large wedding has. My only advice is to not hire a photographer for some crazy amount of time unless you want every second captured. We hired ours for 4 hours and I know it would have been plenty of time to capture the shots we wanted. Also, don't get discouraged when you try to book a photographer who has "weddings starting at 5000 with 10 hours of shooting time" listed. Most photographers can give you an elopement rate or even hourly.

We did a micro DW with 15 guests. Our timeline was 4-10 pm but several guests were day drinking (and were going to leave the next morning) so they left around 8:30, the rest by 9-9:30.

We skipped dancing (not our crowd’s thing), but had a full cocktail hour, family-style dinner, and two soloist musicians (violinist for ceremony, accordionist cocktail hour, playlist during dinner). It was like one big loud dinner party! 🎉

Hi Alisa! You can keep the same structure and flow of a 100 person wedding, or you can switch things up to better fit your event!

If you're waiting for the "first look" to be when you walk down the aisle, then you should think about keeping a cocktail hour for your 20 guests so that you can take pictures. You can definitely still have open dancing for everyone, or just carve out a few minutes for your traditional spotlight dances!
