How to obtain marriage license in FL when living in NJ

Kelsea, on January 27, 2014 at 3:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hello!

I live in NJ but I am planning a wedding in the Tampa, FL area.

My question is, is there a way to apply for that license in FL without having to actually travel there from NJ? Flying from NJ to FL just to apply might be a little inconvenient, although I'll do it if I have to! But I was just curious if there was a way to do it all from NJ without having to do the traveling. Thanks!

You can't get a marriage license without applying in person. There is a three day waiting period:

I live in Florida I will be going to NJ for our marriage license, we both were born and raised there and also because our wedding will be held there. But I was told we had to go there for our license.

I called about a similar situation - We live in Arizona and are getting married in Rhode Island - I just asked the town hall what we needed, when we could apply, how long it takes, waiting periods, etc.

The lady was amazing and super helpful

I would suggest calling to find out what you need and if you can do it when you arrive for the wedding

Call the office directly. They're the only ones that can give you the most accurate answer. They may also be able to help you with the logistics of it all.

For me, in California, both the bride and groom had to be present to apply.

The information that I've received regarding Florida state law is that both parties must be present to obtain the marriage license. However, if both parties are out of state residents, the 3 day waiting period is waived.

I live in FL and just went through the process. The bride and groom must apply in person at a FL Clerk of Court office with valid government-issued photo ID's.

The application fee is just under $100.

There is then a 3 day waiting period before you can marry. Your best bet would probably be to arrive in FL 3-4 days before the wedding.

The waiting period is waived for non-residents. If you know where you are getting married, look up the closest county clerk to there and see how/when you can get the license. Likely, you will need to be in the state at least one business day before the wedding (I assume Friday.)

Hope this helps. The waiting period does not apply if you are a resident of another state.

The best thing to do is check with the local government offices. In some states laws and costs may vary county to county.

As long as you and FH do NOT have a Florida drivers license, you can go in and obtain the license on the same day. I just did this on the 17th. Both hubby and I had GA drivers license but got married in Tampa. Went the day before the wedding and it took 20 minutes.Nerve wrecking! But it worked out.
