How to get over your feelings ?

Halle, on July 9, 2019 at 7:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 47
So I’m really wondering how brides get over negative or distasful criticism on your ideas for YOUR wedding .
I came home today after my meeting with my potential caterer SUPER excited to tell my parents about the ideas we came up with .
My potential caterer was awesome she supported me in my breakfasted “dinner “ theme for my 4pm reception idea . She gave me so many ideas that could turn my reception into food entertainment. Anyway I come home ecstatic to tell my parents. When I told them my dad (with a disgusted face ) says breakfast for dinner ?? “Seriously” (more disgusted faced ) my mom was no help when I asked her all she said was “ I mean I guess .... it’s your wedding” like that answers my question to her — “is this a stupid idea?” —

So now idk what to do or how to feel . I was so excited bc breakfast is my favorite kind of food actually me and Fhs . My wedding being in December I thought it would be fun to throw some random foods out that no one would expect . Anway I hope you guys can understand my writing .

I have literally done EVERYTHING by myself for this wedding and my parents haven’t been that helpful or even just exciting . It’s crazy how nice it is to talk to vendors because they are just as excited as you are 😪

Girl if you want breakfast food, go for it!!! I literally had an aunt tell me we could serve hot dogs and she’d be happy! It’s your day - you do it how you want!

I love the idea!! And it's something different. I'm having regular wedding food chicken and beef lol. I would love it and be pleasantly surprised if I was a guest. What Ideas did she come up with?

Ugh. 🤦‍♀️ How frustrating! My hubby & I didn’t share any details because we wanted to surprise guests and by doing that we accidentally avoided all criticism. When your guests experience a wedding that is so “You” they’ll love it.

I love breakfast! As long as there’s enough protein (maybe some fried chicken & waffles, or carving station), I’d love it!

I absolutely love breakfast! It's your wedding and if breakfast is both you and your fiance's favorite meal of the day then you should do it. I say make a plan with your FH and trust your caterer and I'm sure you all could come up with a menu that would satisfy you both and your parents. Just remember, this is ya'lls day, and you should have what you want.

I love the idea and the fact that it’s different. I say who cares what anyone thinks. It’s you alls wedding and as long as you all will enjoy it it shouldn’t matter especially considering you’re doing everything.

We are thinking of doing like a mimosa bar of course , a pancake bar where guest can put toppings on their pancakes with different types of syrups , . We are also having a biscuit bar where guest can add meats and or different jams . The other foods discussed are Shrimp and grits, quiche, hash brown casserole and possible a donut stand from my favorite donut shop here. It’s all going to be arranged in stylish ways, but that’s all we have right now .

I love the idea of breakfast but dinner- it’s my go to when it’s just me and the kids and nothing sounds good. My FH hates breakfast for dinner, hence why I only do it when it’s the kids and I, but he’d get over it. It’s your day and you should have food you like- and make sure you get to eat it! If your guests are disappointed by what you’re serving they really need to rethink the whole point of the event they are attending: to celebrate your commitment to each other and your love. It’s nit about what they like, it’s about what the two of you like and what speaks to your relationship. The first time FH took me out we went to breakfast because he was working nights, so he had just gotten off work 😁. Happy planning!

This may not be what you want to hear and this is not advise, but when this happened to me, I said “eff it” and my FH and I plan to elope. Then have a ceremony in either his parents’ backyard or my dad’s.
I had the same breakfast idea as well and my FH said his family wouldn’t enjoy it. I understand it’s your day, but if you suspect guests will be so disappointed that they won’t eat most of the food on their plate then I would feel like I wasted money.
Again, not giving you advice, just sharing how I dealt with it, even if it wasn’t the best approach.

I like the waffles instead of the pancakes they will keep better unless there's a station for made to order pancakes, but everything else sounds good chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits etc!!

I really doubt that your guests will be disappointed at all! Attending weddings are always exciting because you're ready to celebrate the couple but also because you have no clue what's coming next. Being uniquely YOU for YOUR big day is admirable and a breath of fresh air. I know exactly where you're coming from though. I had to drag my Ma to dress shop and she literally said "If you like it, I love it" to a dress I was ecstatic about.
It's unfortunate but that may just be how some will react, and although you desire a form of validation from your loved ones (bc it's truly reassuring during planning of something so monumental) you just may not get it.

Just know that you are doing what makes you and yours happy and that's what matters. Find someone or something like this forum to get your second opinions and affirmations! Cling to what's positive!

    Hi Michelle,
I’m severely allergic to shellfish and so are several people in my family. That would be a deadly brunch for us.
