How to get a family member to "marry us?"

Mrs Cupcake, on October 4, 2010 at 5:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I am doing JOP ceremony with my FS in Washington state in Jan 2011. Since we have to move to So Cal after the wedding in Feb. The wedding will be in Nor Cal and I want my grandpa to "marry us." But I dunno how to get him to be cert to perform ceremony. It has to be vows renewal ceremony right? Please let me know how I can get my grandpa to perform wedding ceremony. Thanks.

Hey girl! I need to look it up but I think he can be certified online. They have to take a class (like how you can take defensive driving online) and then get something notarized saying they have the authority through the state. Or they can do it through the Post Office... That's for TX though it might be diff for CA. I'm sorry if I am totally off about this! lol

LOL thanks through but do you know what it is called? Officant cert? I noticed the officant would have to go through court, so I am confused.

They'll sell you an "ordination" on the website. It's legal, because the state can't constitutionally say what's a church and what isn't. Your grandpa may have to register with the state or the county clerk in the place where you live, but they give you instructions on how to do that.

Okay, if you are getting legally married in Washington. You will not need to have a legal wedding in NorCal. As you were already legally married in Washington. You can have your friend officiate the NorCal wedding easy, he/she will not need to be ordained/certified. You can just write a ceremony and skip the legal bits (and marriage licence signing, since you already did that)

Now, if you are getting legally married in NorCal, you will have to read the state/district certification rules to getting a person certified, now, if he is certified as a civil servant (through the government) he wouldn't be 'ordained' that is for people of the cloth. Just make sure that if you are wanting a religious ceremony, that if he is certified as a civil servant, he is legally able to perform a marriage ceremony invloving relgion. Make sense? If you want a religous wedding, you will have to look into him getting ordained online a a universal life church or such.

@ Norcal Bride, To my knowledge, once you are married in a state/province, you are married no matter what state/province you live in.

Although, wedding vendors would make even MORE money if the case was you had to get re-married if you move to a different state...hope that doesn't happen, 1 wedding is expensive enough!

No, he can perform any ceremony you like if you are already legally married! I just wanted to let you know about the ablility to perform religous weddings when you're officiant is a civil servent, some areas will not allow a religous ceremony performed by a civil servant and a civil service performed by a ordained person. That is the law in ALberta, but could be the case for many areas. You just have to look into it. BUT you will already be legally married, so no worries!

Oh I am not worried about it, I am having a very small reception at Italian resturant in a private room and I can get married at a church. I can pick a officant to marry us.

I'm confused. You want to be married twice? If you are married in ANY state in the USA, you are considered Married in every other US State. If you are having a legally recognized person marrying you in Washington, your Grandfather would just be saying the words. There is no legal aspect that you need to worry about. If you want to just have the one wedding, you grandfather can become legally Ordained online (FREE) through Universal Life Church. Then he is responsible for making sure the License you purchase 90 days or less before the wedding date has the correct info as far as he knows, That at least one witness signs the license, that he properly fills out his portion and mails it back in the provided envelope within 10 days of the wedding date.

If you have more questions, email me. I perform Legal Weddings in California for a living.

I agree with Finally Mrs.Schmidt, The barefoot wife!. The status of online ordinations is complicated, and varies from state to state. However, if you have already been legally married (in any state), any ceremony you have after that will have no legal significance, so you can use anyone you want as the officiant.
