How to find out what my body type is and best wedding dress style

Connie, on May 28, 2020 at 8:46 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
Hello everyone,

As I am about to go to my 5th wedding dress boutique this Saturday, I am afraid I will not find my dress. I have mainly been trying on Ball Gowns and a few A-Lines, but I’m wondering if I’m trying on dresses that are not complimenting my body type. But I am not sure what my body type is totally. It’s confusing to find out. Help is totally wanted! This is me in a dress I had on last year. Best I could find to show my silhouette! A lines usually flatter all body types.

Are you on the shorter side? Can't tell from the picture, but often, ball gowns can be overwhelming if you're petite.

I would try on some silhouettes you haven't tried yet...mermaid, fit and flare, just to get a sense...the dress in the picture you posted is more form fitting and looks great on you. So perhaps in a wedding gown that shape would work too.

Best of luck! Share some pictures if you can!

I think the dress you posted looks great on you! You look rather petite, so I could see where a big ball gown might be swallowing you up. Maybe a mermaid gown would work because you could still get some poof at the bottom if you wanted, but the top would elongate your body more? Are the bridal consultants at the stores you've been to helping make recommendations?

The places I have been to just ask what I wanted and I’ve said ball gowns but they didn’t pull different styles. This time I will just try on all of them. I just want to be able to dance on my wedding day and not feel constricted

I’m similar body type, a bit taller. The styles I thought I wanted did not work for me. I had a lady helping me that suggested I try a fit and flare style. It was perfect. The fit and flares are all slightly different. I ended up with a trumpet style fit and flare witty a sweetheart neckline, strapless. I also found I needed the right balance of structure and comfort. Too much structure I could sit, and not enough structure....well I just felt frumpy in them.

Sorry one more thing, when you go in to the next shop, tell them you DONT know what you want. Ask them to pull a couple styles you they think will work well on you, and make sure to say comfort is important.

I had a vision of what I wanted my dress to be because of my body type, ultimately I found out that wasn't the dress for me at all. I ended up choosing a dress with a ruched waist and sheath style which ultimately flattered my body.

I think it's most helpful to try on all types of styles of gowns. you never know what may work on you or what you end up actually liking.

I think its best to try on all sorts of silhouettes, I first thought that A-lines would be the only fit for me, but everytime I wore one it only made me feel shorter and bigger, and then I tried on a trumpet dress with a cathedral train and the rest was history.

Many people don't have a set in stone across the board description of their body type but they know what looks good on them.

Try on everything you can. They say you'll be surprised that what looks good on you will be completely different from what you liked on the model.

I'm 5"1 or 2... I have a similar build. Try a sheath. It will look straight on the hanger but don't worry - your figure will being the curves! On curvy petite women, less is more. Go more fitted... Smiley smile
