How to credit songs in program?

Jessy, on May 27, 2010 at 11:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

I'm working on my program... and need quick answers! How do I properly give credit for songs we're using? We've got live musicians playing "What A Wonderful World" for the processional. Obviously the musicians are credited for performing it... but do I credit Louis Armstrong (who first recorded the song) or the song's writers? I have the same question for our recessional.

Thanks!

I'm just putting the name of the song along with the soloist's name who's singing. But if you just want to properly credit the original artist you could put

Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" performed by XXX

I was thinking of putting something like, (and i'll use your song as an example) "What a Wonderful Word" - Louis Armstrong, performed by XXXX, but I kinda like Ladylee's idea too...

Actually, it is the composer that should be credited. In this case, there were two who collaborated, George David Weiss and Bob Thiele.

You should list it as "What a Wonderful World" - Weiss/Thiele. Your performer's name(s) can then be shown on the right side of the program. Most people will recognize that this is the song that was most famously performed by Louis Armstrong. You could even add a note to that effect. However, it is very definitely the composers who should be credited in the program.

"Song title" and then we list the last names of the composer(s) off to the right in a smaller font.
