How to choose a makeup style?!

April, on April 21, 2021 at 2:09 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

Hey! I'm starting to look into who will do my hair and makeup, so I was wondering how y'all chose what makeup style you were going for? Did you know what you wanted to be done as soon as you found your dress? Or did you already have a look in mind?

Also, how did you choose who to go with for your hair & makeup? There are so many options, it's overwhelming! Any advice when choosing/dealing with hair & makeup is greatly appreciated!!!

    Hi April! How exciting.

For my make up look I just told the MUA that when I get my make up done I look like a drag queen bc my eyes are big lol. I also told her I wanted a romantic look. she listened and did an amazing job !

For my hair I read in a blog that you should wear your hair how you usually do when you go out or to a party bc you know that's how you look best. For example if I like my hair down when I go out . . I should have it down for the wedding but obviously styled nicely. So I'm thinking about big waves, during my hair trial I'll have different type of curls done to choose the one I like best.

I'm super blessed that my mom is a hairstylist so she'll be doing my hair. My MUA is actually someone my mom has worked with and I love her work.

I know that when I wear makeup, I like my features to be enhanced. I'm not one for minimal looks as I can do that myself. I looked up wedding HMUA in my area on Instagram and looked at the pictures I kept being drawn to. The MUA I chose does a beautiful job with glam looks (contouring, bold eyes, etc.) and the hair stylist I chose has magical fingers when it comes to braided looks. I would use social media to find looks you're drawn to and then select your HMUA from there.

Take a look at Instagram, Pinterest, Google Images and see what you’re drawn to. You gravitate towards certain looks for a reason.

As I created my wedding vision, I considered what makeup look would fit with that asthetic (winter, romantic, silver accents, flowing tulle, dark pops of color). I plan on doing my own HMU and I know my FH prefers it when my makeup is in neutral tones and only accentuates my features.

I'm planning on a slightly more dramatic version of my standard 'special ocassion' look which is a light brown/mauve smokey eye, thin winged eyeliner, long dark lashes (no false ones, just mascara), silvery glitter in the contour highlights, and a dark red lipstick.

I'm choosing to do my own makeup because, honestly, I think I do a pretty darn good job and I can't bring myself to pay an arm and a leg for something I can do myself. I don't want airbrushing or anything like that so the most I am prepared to pay for is a few new products (which I need anyways). My SIL also did her own make up for her wedding but she had a makeover and had the artist teach her how to achieve that specific look and practiced a few times until she could do it herself. She does not usually wear or apply makeup and still looked stunning on the day.

Makeup is a big hobby of mine and I've had an idea of how I'd like my wedding makeup to look for a long time.

It's essentially just a pumped-up version of the makeup I do on myself almost every day - glowy skin, soft peachy cheeks and eyes, winged brown liner plus 'my lips but better' lipstick.

    here's an example:

I then went onto Pinterest and instagram to see if I could find local people who did that look, and had a trial. I've had her do my makeup for a few special occasions (like our engagement shoot etc), and I feel confident I'm going to like what she does on the day!

I would say, start by looking at pictures of makeup looks that you like, or pictures of yourself that you especially like the way you look. From there, see if you can find makeup artists that have examples of that style and narrow down from there.

That's just some random photo from pinterest - sorry, I just realised I did write that in a confusing way!

but this is me, with makeup done by me which is pretty close to the above (no false lashes).

I thought about doing my own makeup on the day, but my bridal party aren't as into makeup as I am and so I could hardly ask them to do their own so I'd still need a professional there, which made me worried I'd end up comparing our two looks and preferring theirs. Plus the whole stress of having to get it right. I'd much prefer to just be pampered.
