How to break a contract with a vendor?

Tricia, on May 22, 2017 at 12:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I need to cancel my MUA. To be clear, she is amazing, I would highly recommend her. It's just logistically it is not working it, and 100% my fault. I didn't think through having someone come to my house vs a salon. I've given a deposit and don't want it back as it is my fault. I feel awkward as we are Facebook friend's ( she is not a friendor) but she's done my makeup before and that was the best way to stay in touch. Do I just email her now or wait until I 100% book a new salon? I have a second trial set for Friday.

If you know for sure that you do not want to work with her, I would say to let her know right away so she can open that day in her schedule and hopefully book another job on that day.

Review your contract. Call her. Don't explain in too much detail, just let her know it's a logistical issue. Be polite and gracious but don't worry too much, it's her business she will not be personally hurt or offended just because you cancelled

If you love her have you asked her if she is willing to travel for an additional fee? Seems like the best option if you can come up with a price that makes it worthwhile for her to travel.

I'm confused as to why it's a problem. If she can go to your house, she can meet you at a salon too. My MUA is coming to the salon. I would do my second trial or at least pay her for it before breaking the news because that's kind of short notice.

Wait...do you want the services to take place at home or at the salon now? Have you tried asking her if she can travel to you? Or if she can provide a place to do the service if that's what you want? I would start with that. You may not have to cancel at all.

My suggestion is to ask her if she is able to travel to you. That way you may be able to fix the whole situation and not have to cancel your amazing vendor!

Sorry, let me clarify, she travels, but works by herself. I didn't think backwards time wise and allow enough time for everyone to get done. We would need to start at 7 if there was just 4 of us and there could be up to 6. SO to start at 7, I would need to wake up around 615 to let her in. I am not a morning person and on my wedding day.... selfish I know, but I was so upset at that idea I almost changed the whole day around. Plus I don't know how many girls want hair and makeup done at this point. It is more stress than it is worth. If it is 5 or more of us she will bring some one else. I can bring hair to the house also, but need to guarantee the number of girls. And regardless we would have to start very early. A salon we can start 2 hours later and add or subtract as needed up to 2 days before hand.. I've called several salons and can't find one that would allow me to bring my own mua in. It's lazy I know, but I was so stressed over this, this is the way I decided to go.

And the part and the deposit was I wasn't looking for advice on how to cancel and try to get the deposit back. But the contract says if I cancel 60 days and she rebooks I do get it back.

Why don't you actually get a headcount of the girls that want professional makeup done, and then go from there?

Ask her if there's a salon she works with. Maybe she already has an agreement with one.

I'm not really understanding all the logistics, but just call her and say your day-of schedule has changed and you'll no longer be needing her services, but that you appreciate her time. I would wait until you've booked something else to reach out.

What time if your wedding that makeup would need to start at 7a?

This is confusing to me. Both my hair and makeup artists are coming to me. They are booked separately. My hair stylist will bring a second person depending on when I finalize how many girls there will be. My makeup artist will bring a second once I let her know how many faces she will have to do. She averages 30 minutes per face. Hair and makeup can be worked on at the same time.

The bride is priority so she gets the "best" time spot, usually closer to last so her hair or makeup is the freshest.

Why can't you ask your BMs if they plan on H&MU (provide them w a heads up about how much it will cost) and then relay the number of people so your artists can decide start time.

IMO, its way more stressful to go to a salon. You're stuck there, you can't leave and you also have to coordinate rides and whatnot. When they come to you, you are literally in control.

It's not really as difficult as you're making it out to be.

OK. So, what if the salon is running late (which happens a lot)? Are you planning to show up late to your wedding. I suggest- sticking w the girl that will go to your house for the peace of mind. Get an assistant or 2 and maybe you guys can start at 745-8 instead of 7am.

She doesn't work woth any hair people anymore. The ones she used to there were issues with. The photographer want me dressing ready by 12 ish, she wants at least an hour per BM, an hour and half for me. Time wise it doesn't work. I jist was so wondering of anybody else had to break contracts before. The it's not you, it's me seems so false, but it really is true in this case. It never occurred to me that we would have had to start this early. The salon I'm trying Friday says appointments would be around 9:30 and we would be out by 11:30, and that gets me back home in plenty of time.

Yes, go ahead and break the contract. But from a vendor perspective please at least do it over the phone. Don't leave your MUA thinking in any way she did something to lose her spot on your wedding team. I'm sure you'll work everything else out. Best wishes!

I don't understand why you don't have a headcount already. You're about 4 months out, I think your BM's should have their mind made up if they want hair/makeup or not.

If the problem is not wanting to wake up early who not have your girls stay over and let her in? Them she can do your makeup at like 8.

OP, what time is your wedding at? I have seven people getting hair and makeup and we are starting at 8:30a for a 3:30/4p picture session at the grounds. Photographer will show up around 12 for some pics of me getting ready.

If you really want a confirmed number, you can either ask each person what they want to do and that you need to know by xyz date, or you pay for it all and you know exactly how many people.

Would the salon be closed for you day of/give you access to all these stylists if you start to run behind schedule? Otherwise you may be in the same boat. For BM about 1 -1.5 hrs for both services is a good guess on total time per person. I would ask the salon how many people you'd have dedicated to your BP so you know it makes more timing sense. Would hate for you to be back in the same situation.
