How to avoid stepping on my dress during a Foxtrot??

Eddie427, on May 1, 2014 at 11:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

My fiance and I will be doing a mix of foxtrot and east coast swing for our first dance.

Problem? Foxtrot has the lady moving backwards essentially the entire time. How do I manage to not step on my dress and subsequently fall and/or rip the dress?!?

My only ideas are:

- wear heels just for the dance (My wedding shoes are ballet flats)

- have a secondary bustle to bring the dress up in the back just for the dance

- change dresses for the dance?!? (not preferred)

- change our dance to not include foxtrot (also not preferred)

Any other ideas!?!?

I'd go with 1 or 2. Your bustle should pick it off the floor enough that you won't trip going backwards, but if that's a hassle and you're comfortable in heels throw some heels on! They'll give you nice posture for the dance as well and I personally find it easier to twirl in heels since your weight is more on the ball of your foot.

Ha! I didn't know dancing in flats was an option-- all the ladies at the dance studio during our lessons are wearing heels Smiley smile I think that's probably going to be your easiest and least expensive option.

(PS we're doing a foxtrot, too Smiley smile)

If you are gliding like you are supposed to while dancing the foxtrot it shouldn't be a problem. (not meant to be rude or insinuate that you aren't dancing properly) Essentially as long as you bustle before you start dancing, your dance movement will push the dress along just like when you are walking forward.

I agree with LillyBride, 1 and 2. Foxtrot is a beautiful dance and having heels (2" is good enough) does helps with posture. If you want, you can find good ballroom shoes online that don't cost a fortune, even less expensive than street shoes.

Thanks for the advice. I also am leaning towards the higher shoes. My fiance is only 1 inch taller than me though.....so I don't want to tower over him! Which is why I am wearing flats in the first place.

And yes, @nicole&mikeM, what you said is what our dance instructor said. That if I am gliding/sliding my feet like I am supposed to, that I shouldn't step on it. I'm just nervous about when I put my heels down....

I will look into some heels and see what I like. Thanks!
