How to avoid "Prom-dress" style disaster?

Josie , on June 26, 2015 at 1:06 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

Hi ladies!

I've been looking around at some wedding dress styles for a long time now. Wedding is in a year, so the time crunch hasn't started yet. But many of dresses I love are flowy, chiffon, and not very traditional.

My sister warned me not to get a "prom-like" dress... What do you think? Is there such a thing? Does it depend on who attends the wedding/venue/accessories etc?

Some dresses I am drawn to are below.

Hey Josie! Those are both beautiful dresses and neither one says "prom" to me. Does prom equal ballgown to your sister? The first picture looks a little less formal but it's still really pretty as a wedding dress. I would have totally tried on dress 2 if I had seen it. You pick something that makes you feel like a bride when you put it on, whether or not it looks like a prom dress Smiley smile

Ok, good advice! I'm not exactly sure what she means by "prom." I'm wondering if she (and by extension, other family members or even guests) have this idea that I will wear lots of lace or something.

None of those look like prom dresses to me. I tried on a dress that looked like a prom dress and I've seen a few others. If you look at a dress and can say if this dress was red (or whatever other color) I could have worn it to senior prom then maybe steer clear. Also giant plastic bling is a dead prom give away.

I love them all. Don't worry about your sister's opinion. She's not the one that will be wearing the dress.

All of those dresses are gorgeous and they definitely do not look prom-ish!

I LOVE that second one you posted! I don't think any of those are "prom-like" dresses at all. I don't really know if a wedding dress can look prom like, but then again I haven't been to prom in almost 20 years, so what do I know about what kids are wearing these days, LOL (Good gawd I sound old). But I do believe I've seen a lot of prom hair on brides ;-)

I really like the third one! None of them look like "prom" to me, but even if they did and you loved it, I'd say get what YOU like! Smiley smile

Those are beautiful, and not prom-y at all! I love sheath dresses, but they didn't look good on me, as I'm short. You should go for it!

Those are not prom-like at all! They are definitely wedding gowns. I think a big difference between prom dresses & wedding dresses (besides a train) is the quality of the materials. The whole look & feel of the bridal gown is higher-end, more classy. Prom dresses are typically made with the cheapest formal fabrics on the market because most high school students wouldn't know the difference & that means a bigger markup for prom dress companies.

Plus styling makes a HUGE difference. You will be styled as a bride, not as a high-schooler. As long as you do not go down the aisle with little twists in your hair secured by lil plastic butterfly clips, I think you are safe Smiley winking lol (Am I giving my age away? Maybe butterfly clips are out now...)

I like the third one! They don't look prom to me. As long as you find a dress that makes you happy then don't worry about your sister. I ended up listening to my sister and had dress regret. Luckily I had time to change dresses before the wedding.

To me when I think of a prom dress I do not think of a light flowy fabric like chiffon. I think more of gowns that are silky satin type dresses with the big fake bling. I also agree with the idea that if you could picture the dress in another color and being worn to prom then it might look like a prom dress. The bottom line is it's your day and your dress so even if you feel in love with a so called "prom dress" as long as you feel pretty in it and like it, that's all that matters! Plus flowy to me means more comfortable!

My dress almost looks like it could be more casual than a wedding dress, but I'm adding a belt and a veil so it looks more "wedding". It will be gorgeous either way though. I love all 3.
