How often do wedding dresses get discontinued?

Eamsee, on December 1, 2017 at 10:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Hey there ladies, My wedding is still a year and half away and I have no intention of physically dress shopping until about 9 months before. However, I do have a few questions, as I have very few girl friends, and none that would know the answer. How long are wedding dresses available to purchase? For example, if a dress is part of the designer's 2016 or 2017 collection, is there a high chance of it being discontinued before the next collection is released? I am asking because I was browsing trying to get an idea of what styles I like (I'm a flannel and overalls kind of gal who didn't even know what an A-line was prior to research) and I stumbled upon a gown that I actually really like and I haven't seem anything similar. That makes me nervous, as I would be bummed if when I do go shopping, it's no longer available. Sorry if this is a silly question, this is just all new territory for me. Thanks!

    Hi...congrats!!

I now am 9 months away from my big day! .....Some dresses become discontinued and some you will see for a few seasons. The dress I'm buying was in a Fall 2016 collection and its still available. I also think if a designers particular dress is selling well and it is a classic/ traditional style; that dress we be around for a bit. But although you said you were not going to try on dresses until 9 months til...you should go to bridal salons and look at dresses in person- it will give you much needed knowledge about the dress styles, fabric, colors, etc. Plus its a good feeling of going into the salon and saying "I'm the Bride!" Don't miss out those memorable moments! Hope all goes well!!

The answer is basically that there isn't a straight answer. I wouldn't recommend waiting to look at dresses though. I found my dress over a year and a half before my wedding. I found it online, I loved it. I went to a bridal salon and tried it and others on and still loved it the best. Then the hunt began. There was no way I could afford that dress from the bridal salon and I didn't want to buy it from them anyway because I'm I guess bigger than a lot of brides, even though I've never thought I was a big girl, but the bridal salon women certainly thought I was, and let me know, since the sample fit me and they all thought I needed to be reassured that I still had time to lose weight. They did have some dresses on sale but they have a kind of random stock of what's on sale based on what gets discontinued of damaged and you can't really predict it. I looked at used dress sites and set up an alert on ebay and other auction sites. Finally a bridal salon went out of business and put their unused sample up for auction and I was able to get my Sophia Tolli Loraina at just over $300. I love it, there was nothing wrong with it, I got a steal but it took Tiiiiiime. My advice is if you've found a dress you love find out where it is, try it on, try others on and once you've decided on the one hunt for a bargain. It takes time to find one so I'd get on it unless you fluctuate weight a lot and are worried about getting the wrong size but even so having an alert on it in any size could totally land you the dress of your dreams at a price you can afford. Happy hunting and good luck!

My dress was from 2016. I bought it in January of 2017 and 2 weeks later it was no longer available for purchase.

I wish there was a straightforward answer to this. I've had my eye on a BEAUTIFUL dress for a while now that's way way out of my budget and was kinda hoping it would go on the discounted rack so it could be on sale where I'm going for my appointment in a few weeks. Lol The dress is from the November 2015 line but is still available so who knows.

A lot of shops are saying you need at least 6 months to order and get fittings done so keep that in mind.

Hhhmmm, yeah it seems like my suspicions were correct. My wedding isn't for another year and a half, so I really didn't want to shop just yet, but since the dress I found is unique and I haven't found anything similar that I like, I may just call the salon and try it on. I have surgical scars and discoloration on my back from internal wires along my spine and to the right in between my shoulder blades. This dress has an illusion top with lace that goes up and would cover not only the scars, but the purple discoloration next to it, Also it has pearl like beading rather than crystal beading and I like that very much. Besides it being so early (and I honestly feel a bit silly shopping so soon), my mother lives in Arizona (I'm in NY) and I promised her I would wait for her to come here during the late summer to go shopping. But maybe it is best for me to see it in person and go from there. Who knows, I may see it in person and it may not be what I was expecting. Thanks for the guidance ladies!
