How much to pay a friend for makeup?

MrsLaurenET, on August 14, 2015 at 10:46 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 7

I have a friend who is going to do my makeup for my e-photos. She is not a professional but I would consider her an expert (she has a blog, etc). She suggested we do a trial (more to have extra time to hang out since I never see her). I told her when I asked her to do it that I would be happy to compensate her for her services. I'm at a loss for how much that should be though. What would you all say is a fair price?

Maybe 50% of what it would cost you to hire a pro?

What about taking her out to dinner? I always think it's a really odd to pay a friend. Unless it's a business transaction.

If she's not a pro-makeup artist, I wouldn't worry about paying her in cash. But giving her a big gift basket with beauty stuff (since I'm sure she loves beauty stuff) and taking her to dinner will be more than enough of a thank you Smiley smile

Google to check on makeup services, but do NOT look at "bridal" makeup - that's always a lot more. Look for "special occassion makeup" services, which will be less. My *bridal* makeup trial and day-of makeup together were $85 base, plus an extra $10 for airbrush makeup. I did not have false lashes, which add more. Local spas charge around here charge $65-ish for evening full look without lashes, but I'm in the DC metro area, which may be more expensive than your area.

You could give her a giftcard for $25 (or whatever you decide) to Sephora or Ulta in a cute little makeup pouch, which makes it more personal.

I wouldn't give cash, I would get a really nice gift card to the spa or to her favorite makeup shop

I went through the same with a friend and i gave her half. she's no longer doing it though.

for my cousin, her hobby is photography so when she took our engagement pictures I sent her a thank you card and a nice gift.

i think gifts are more personal and i felt better when i went that route.
